Highlights:

  • 2 cops were killed and 14 injured in a preeminent terrorist attack in the outskirts of Srinagar
  • Sources reveal that the attack was carried out by Kashmir Tigers, an offshoot of Jaish-e-Mohammed
  • One of the militants said the police was injured in retaliatory fire

Following a major militant attack on Monday in a highly secured neighbourhood of Srinagar, two policemen breathed their last and 14 others were critically wounded. Police reported that the attack was executed by a Jaish-E-Mohammed offshoot named Kashmir Tigers.

This attack was the most significant after the ones that happened when the special status of J&K was revoked and the Lepthora (Pulwama) bombing that took the lives of 40 CRPF personnel.

Details on the attack were sought by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He also conveyed his condolences via Twitter to the bereaved families of the martyred security personnel present in the attack. Omar Abdullah, National Conference Leader and former CM took to Twitter to express his resentment on the attack. He condemned the attack unequivocally alongside expressing his heartfelt condolences to the families for their irreplaceable loss.

PDP (J&K’s Peoples Democratic Party) leader Mehbooba Mufti also was deeply saddened by the incident. She also took a dig at the GoI’s erroneous narrative of normalcy saying that there have been no efforts in the direction of correcting the same.

The Police revealed that the militants open fired on the police bus of the 9th Battalion of J&K Police’s armed wing at Zewan along the fringes of Srinagar city. The incident injured 16 policemen all of whom were shifted to the Army’s 92 Base Hospital at Badamibagh where two policemen succumbed to their injured and died.

Police sources confirmed one of them was an Assistant Sub Inspector and the other was a Selection Grade constable. The attack was carried out by three militants who arrived on a scooty and escaped after indiscriminate firing at the police bus.

The police personnel were retreating to their campus after finishing their duties. Despite the fact that the fire was retaliated, the terrorists somehow escaped the spot in the veil of darkness.

J&K Police’s armed wing along with numerous other police battalions are housed by Zewan which also accommodates the CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) sector headquarters and ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police) headquarter.

Militant attacks on the police force have escalated this year. Figures reveal 19 policemen have died in J&K this year, including two on Monday. Militants killed two policemen in Bandipore two days ago.
