7 FREE Self-Care Ideas to Do Every Day

Self-care is something I’m starting to incorporate into my life as I travel along my journey to build a successful YouTube and film career.

However, although self-care is now all the rage, it has unfortunately attracted some criticism.

Criticism like self-care shouldn’t be about indulgencewhere you take bubble baths and sip champagne and call it “self-care.”

Another criticism about self-care is that poor women don’t have access to luxury treatments like the selfies you see bombarding Instagram with women getting massages, mani-pedis, or relaxing at spa resorts.

Instead, self-care is something one should do every day that’s beneficial for your overall wellness and mental health.

That said, by no means is self-care meant to be a “luxury” or accessible only to a certain class of people.

I see nothing wrong with a little indulgence, but save the luxuries for your pamper self-care Sundays! Practice self-care as a daily habit and make it part of your lifestyle.

I did a video for this blog post here.

7 FREE Self-Care Ideas to Do Every Day

1. Light a Soy Scented Candle

For many people, lighting a soy scented candle is very relaxing. Plus, for me it feels like a little bit of luxury because I don’t usually light candles in my home.

However, I’m going to start!

Vanilla, fresh linen, and anything berry smelling are my favorite scents. So, the next time you wish to indulge your senses, light a lovely soy scented candle.

2. Give Yourself a Foot Massage

Here’s a self-care idea that’s free and feels a little luxurious. If you are on your feet all day, why not treat your toesies to a foot massage?

No need to complicate it.

Simply soak your feet in a tub of warm water for 15-20 minutes, pat dry with a towel, and using your favorite foot cream to give your feet a massage.

Afterwards, throw on a pair of socks to help keep your feet feeling soft and moisturized all day long.

3. Wake Up 30 Minutes Early
If you have kids to get ready for school in the morning, a dog to walk, or you try to squeeze in a workout routine before work, waking up earlier might be a challenge.

Still, the extra 30 minutes can really benefit your morning routine. Not to mention, can help you start your day feeling a bit more relaxed.

Therefore, use the extra time to stretch, meditate, script in your journal, or cook yourself a hot, healthy breakfast.

Taking a little extra time in the morning to be attentive to yourself is a great and easy self-care idea.

4. Relax with a Cup of Tea

I know if I had a long or stressful day, I make myself a cup of tea with lemon and honey to help ease any tension I may have.

If you don’t like tea, you can have coffee, hot chocolate, or a small glass of wine.

Then, just sit down for a few moments alone in a quiet place to enjoy your beverage.

Just be still and relax.

Even if I only 5 minutes to enjoy my tea in a quiet environment, it helps me to feel more peaceful.

5. Dry Body Brushing Before a Shower

My sister put me on to dry body brushing and I also did a video on how to do it in case you want to check it out.

Besides the health benefits of dry body brushing, it feels like a spa session!

This is where waking up an extra 30 minutes early can really come in handy. You can use the extra time to give yourself an all body massage right before jumping in the shower.

And oh…how soft your skin will feel afterwards!

Rub on your favorite lotion or light body oil, and boom…you are ready to start your day feeling invigorated.

6. Stretch

Whether one decides to stretch in the morning or in the evening, everyone should incorporate some form of stretching as part of their daily self-care routine; especially if you sit behind a desk all day.

You don’t have to do any fancy moves to help release some of the tension in your neck, back, and legs.

However, if you want a more guided lesson on stretching, there are plenty of free stretching videos on YouTube to follow along.

7. Dim the Lights Before Bed

Right before bed, try getting into the habit of dimming the lights around your home to signal your brain that it’s almost time for bed.

This is an easy self-care tip to do and it’s a great way to help you wind down before going to sleep.

Therefore, turn off the T.V., put down your cell phone, dim the lights, and use your DIY self-care kit as you prepare retiring for the evening.

Having your mind settled right before bed can help you get a good night’s sleep.

There you have it!

Self-care doesn’t have to be expensive and you can always spruce up these self-care ideas to make the experience feel more indulgent.
