* spoilers ahead*

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the connection between a fading Western star Rick Dalton (DiCaprio) and his stunt double Cliff Booth (Pitt) is traced. When hippy Hollywood takes over Dalton and Booth from Tinseltown struggles to find their feet in an LA that they no longer recognize. Meanwhile Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) who lives next door to Dalton has just started making her industry splash. When it comes to Tarantino’s works, the tale of retribution is very familiar; victims always get their revenge at the end, reversing history to support the battered tortured killed and mistreated as was the case with Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained. However some believe that it fell flat this time around the edge.

Was the end of “Once Upon a Time” baseless and sexist in Hollywood?

The Salon claims that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood does not deserve its ending because the film focuses heavily on Booth and Dalton before choosing in the final act to reverse history with Sharon Tate’s survival (as if out of the blue). The Salon goes on to argue that the victim is not her own savior, unlike in Tarantino’s previous works. Tate is rescued by two people in an allegedly sexist way, and has nothing to do with the reversal of history. Some contend, however, that the narrative execution of Tarantino is a perfect fit “in line with the historical zeitgeist.”

Was the culmination of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood a perfect conclusion to a fairytale of the 1960s?

Note that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in its simplest form is an ode to the Hollywood of yesteryear: the Hollywood that introduced damsels and violent gunfights and cowboys to heroes and villains. You get the picture. The nature of the old-school fairytale that defines this film “which marks this film” depends on the end; it serves to strengthen the whole story that the film has built up to that point. The tale always revolved around Booth and Dalton. This film was never marketed as a Tate Murders retelling; it was pitched as a Hollywood story that included Charles Manson as such. Tarantino builds a tale about Hollywood in his approach and tells the viewer once on a moment like this it has gone down. A fading movie star once saved the day, and his stunt double. Sharon Tate once became an even bigger movie star; however, this fairytale was never her redemption story just starting out in the industry.
