Staff picks for best movies this week include the long-awaited sequel to a sci-fi classic from 1996, a historical account of a legendary uprising and a nail-biting thriller starring Blake Lively. Let’s hop in and we’ll think about new releases?

1. Independence Day: Resurgence 2/2.752 2/2.752 Independence Day: Resurgence It’s been 20 years since Independence Day came to theaters and smashed every box office record we had at that time. Of course, a year later Titanic arrived on the scene to eventually blow that out of the water but the alien invasion flick by Roland Emmerich was the hottest ticket in Hollywood for a brief period. Knowing it’s surprising that it took a sequel for a whole two decades to make its way into theaters and yet we are here. So welcome Independence Day: The Restoration. It’s about fuckin’ time. Early reviews for the film are at best mixed with its Rotten Tomatoes score hovering around a 52 percent positive rating less than impressive The Hollywood Reporter noting The Wrap offers a much less favorable take citing the lack of real stakes given the huge CGI destruction that we see in the film. 2.

Free State of Jones

How about a ride in the opposite direction if bombastic sci-fi isn’t quite your speed? Matthew McConaughey stars in Free State of Jones telling the true story of a group of deserters farmers and escaped slaves who rose up in the South during the Civil War against the Confederacy. The film embellishes all of its more spectacular elements, of course, but it is also a fascinating look at a story that many have never heard before. Rotten Tomatoes isn’t particularly friendly with the film at the moment giving it 29%. Compared to Independence Day: Resurgence would fit nicely into that niche while serving the dual function of scratching your itch for the past of the Civil War. 3. Given its shoestring budget and tidy runtime of 87 minutes, the Shallows

Of all our staff picks none even come close to the strong critical reception of floating around a 77 percent rating right now. Even when the weekend’s easiest movie happens to be the better one it says something about its quality overall. The plot is Jaws -like watching a lone surfer on a remote beach terrorized by a shark in nature. She has to figure out a way to survive long enough to help her arrive with a chewed-up leg and no easy way back to shore. All in all, it sounds like a fascinating and thrilling mystery in the middle of a busy new releases weekend. @NickNorthwest More from Entertainment Cheat Sheet:

What’s important is how you handle the tough time. Many couples move about with ease across conflict while others crack under pressure. One reason certain couples survive ups and downs in life is because they are reminded of how each other is handled. The most popular couples are making an effort to nurture the relationship regularly. It’ll be important to work on improving your relationship skills if you want your union to last. Six engaged couples are doing this to help them stay together.

Happy couples show each other their gratitude for each chance they get. They don’t take each other for granted and they know it is a blessing to be shared every day with their partner. A research study at the University of Georgia found that the success of a marriage could be predicted by expressions of gratitude. “We find that feeling valued and knowing that your spouse values directly influence how you feel about your marriage how dedicated you are to it and your confidence that it will last,” Ted Futris said in a statement to the study’s co-author.

2. You kindly remind each other

Recall the nice things that your partner has done every day. Did they take out the recycling for example, or come home for dinner early one night? No matter how small the action makes it a habit to acknowledge the goodness as it happens, and to make a mental note of how happy it makes you feel. When you see they mention it to your friend. This helps to keep you in what Dr. John Gottman calls the Positive View or Positive Sentiment Override to note the good things about your partner. It is a feeling of optimistic well-being arising from positive thoughts and experiences. 3. We pay attention to each other Successful couples have perfected the art of listening and being mindful of each other. Through seeking to understand each other’s needs and making an effort to meet those needs as best they can, they know how to overcome conflicts. In his book The 5 Love Languages author Gary Chapman explains such basic needs as words of affirmation quality time receiving gifts acts of service and physical contact (or love languages as he refers to them). 4. They have compassion Productive couples gracefully fix breakd
owns in relationships. These partners pause to iron out their differences with love and care rather than walking out of the room in a huff or giving the silent treatment. Letting stuff blast is t their style. Rather they work actively to overcome a deterioration of the relationship by letting each other know how they feel and making an attempt to fix what does work in the relationship. We respect each other’s feelings and move forward by working about their issues and doing what they can to emotionally relieve pain. Successful partners, while happy relationships can usually be hard to understand. Consequently, when appropriate, they know how to disperse tension with playfulness and a little humour. One of the main ingredients in their formula for a fruitful relationship is a dose of laughter. Writer and therapist Enda Junkins said that she knows that misery is the killer of many happy relationships. It is my opinion that in relationships, it’s excessive and imposed intensity that brings unhappiness and divorce. We give up a playful attitude towards life together, and the happiness it brings, for many different reasons. We lose our focus on life without joking and our problems are still in our face. It’s no wonder that in relationships we finally want outBelly Laughter: something Else Good Below the Surface. 6. We are committed to each other couples who share a happy partnership and the wellbeing of their family. They plan to stick it out even if things get tough. Most importantly, even when they don t like each other, they choose to love one another. Their partnership is paramount. The Cheat Facebook Cover! Alice Stone More Articles February 21, 2020 His show featured some very smart, but lesser known subject experts. The likes of Elon MuskNeil DeGrasse Tyson he’s interviewed. It would be oversimplification to assume what he is doing is just comedy. It was however more rooted in a comedy genre when the show began. Later, Rogan and his first producer broke down ways of forever changing the series.

Joe Rogan and Brian Redban go a long way back

Figure 1 Joe Rogan Jeff Bottari / Zuffa LLC / Zuffa LLC via Getty Images Brian Redban was the closest collaborator in the early days of the new millennium, almost 20 years ago. Its first projects were videos from YouTube. Such shorts called The Joe Show weren’t nearly as successful as the later Joe Rogan Experience. Rogan then switched formats in 2009. His changeover reveals great foresight. Podcasts were common in 2009 but were not as large as now. Rogan walked in at the ground floor and Redban became his right hand man.Rogan has worked hard to curate a wide variety of guests from a wide range of fields from history buffs , scientific experts and famous authors. The surreal style of Redban’s comedy was simply not a good match. Redban would go off on long tangents or disrupt a tet with a guest of Rogan’s. This was in no way funny or productive and it began to get on the nerves of Rogan. The last episodes Redban had felt a little nervous on the show. Second Redban was no professional podcast producer. Nothing more complicated than a YouTube video he had never made. Rogan decided to increase the episodes because the podcast was beginning to take off. For a sound expert, this is hard to do. Rogan recruited Jamie Vernon who remains with him until today. Vernon is an audio technician, and did not have all the Redban expertise. Joe Rogan and Brian Redban are still friends. Rogan has improved his style over time, while Redban pursues the same signature jokes. He continues to make new content and has enough to retain his professional comedian status. Occasionally he still creates shows too although the consistency is poor like the early episodes of The Joe Rogan Experience. Each time Rogan has him looking for Brian Redban spike on the show google. While Redban didn’t popularize the show he still benefits from its success today. That wouldn’t be likely had he still been on the show.

Monday morning Cheat Sheet: 3 News Moving Markets Dan RitterGoogle+Twitter More Articles 28 October 2013 2/2.756 It was Monday 28 October and the futures of U.S. markets were volatile before the opening bell. Investors look forward to the report on industrial production from the Federal Reserve, which is expected to show that total production growth remained consistent at + 0.4 per cent in September. Growth in the manufacturing sector is projected to slow to + 0.3 percent from + 0.7 percent, in line with data released last week showing a large slowdown in production output. It is unclear how long it is going to last for quantitative easing (the policy under which the Fed buys $85 billion worth of assets on the open market per month). Tapering was planned but not executed after the last FOMC policy meeting but in the aftermath of the partial shutdown and with current vice president Janet Yellen set to take the helm at the beginning of the new year the taper timetable has become uncertain and investors seem relaxed settling back into an atmosphere dominated by QE. Around 8:45 a.m. Dow futures were off 0.06% S P 500 futures were off 0.06% and Nasdaq futures were up 0.04%. Most of Asia’s major equity markets advanced Monday despite ongoing worries about a credit crunch in China. Despite efforts to curate its growth and escape the boom-and-bust traps that come with the fastest growing economies, the world’s second-largest economy has found itself staring at the bubble of what some fear might be a crisis. China has found itself with an unprecedented amount of high-cost debt, and is now investing as much as 38.6% of its total output on debt payments alone. Chinese companies are bearing an estimated debt burden equal to 145% of the gross domestic product of the country. However, the Chinese central bank has stated that it would not inject cash into the economy to alleviate the conditions of credit. As a result, cash prices shot up at the end of last week. Central bank inaction is unlikely to be incompetence but rather a warning that policymakers will seek some tightening of the framework. China’s loan addiction has become deeply alarming to both internal and external analysts, and some have interpreted the lack of action as a political warning itself. In Japan the Nikkei closed at 14396.04 at 2.19 percent and the yen rose to 97,6450 against the dollar after a round of strong corporate earnings. The Hang Seng climbed 0.48 per cent to 22806.58 in Hong Kong and the SE Composite advanced 0.04 per cent to 2133.87 in Shanghai. In India the Mumbai Sensex fell to 20570.28 by 0.55 per cent. The ASX All Ordinaries in Australia climbed 0.96 per cent to 5437.30. For several months, Europe’s recovery had been in and out of risk. Things emerged when the overall economic performance of the region recently improved in several quarters for the first time (increasing 0.4 percent in the EU’s second quarter after about 2 years of contraction), but many are still not sustainable in growth. Data released last week by Markit Economics suggested a decrease in overall economic activity in October. The flash reading from the company’s composite index of purchasing managers dropped from 52.2 to 51.5. Business confidence in the region’s major economies has also recently edged lower. On Monday, Italy’s national statistics office announced that its composite October business trust climate index dropped from 82.8 to 79.3. The news echoed a recent fall in consumer confidence last week. Istat’s consumer confidence index was down from 100.8 to 97.3. Chris Williamson chief economist at Markit, however, retained some hope in the study from last week. “It’s obviously disappointing the dip in the PMI in October, but it would be unwise to read too much into one month’s data.” “It’s too early to say the recovery is losing momentum.” Williamson noted that the emphasis should be on four consecutive months of data beyond the 50 expansion mark, not simply on details that could possibly be the result of natural numerical fluctuations. What will carry this Big Week of Earnings?

Harman International (NYSE: HAR): Harman posts a non-GAAP gross margin of 40 basis points to 26.8 per cent in Q3. The rise was due to a greater leverage in the cost base of fixed costs on higher sales and increases in productivity. The shares closed during the day at $49.58 up $2.32 or 4.91 percent. We have ranged from $25.53 and $51.76 in a 52-week range. For the Wall St. Cheat Sheet Pro click here.

‘General Hospital’: Critics Say This is Why The Series Has Been Going ‘Downhill’ for Years

More Articles February 20 2020 Let’s be honest in saying TV soap operas have never been Shakespeare. Though for many decades they have had some strong storytelling mainly due to a small bank of talented authors. ABC’s General Hospital used to have some interesting characters and dialog that everybody always thought existed. Though things appear to have changed in more recent years. Anyone who still follows his approach to dialogue has gone downhill much. Many hackneyed cliches not including other clunky modes of speech tend to be used. Some people wonder what’s going on and if the writing teams are similar to students, rather than the experts they have had for decades. What’s really occurring there and is it a sign soap operas are on their last legs after almost 90 years of existence? Figure 1 Michelle Stafford (Nina) and Donnell Turner (Curtis) Rick Rowell / Walt Disney Television via Getty Images

The great soap opera writers of yore

Soap operas in general started in the earliest days of radio soon attracting stay-at-home wives and mothers in those days. Not that men also didn’t become attached to these shows perhaps more so in recent years as more stay-at-home dads become increasingly common. Even though and Agnes Nixon were some of the best-known names of the earlier eras. For decades, Nixon wrote soap operas alone, until her death in 2016. More recently soap operas have started to take a bit of a dive in the ratings. Networks had to cut budgets, which resulted in something not going unnoticed on Reddit by fans of the General Hospital.

Fans think budget cuts have scrapped the old writer training program

Is this the real reason Reddit users lament some of the clunky dialog on General Hospital this season heard about? Some of the examples cited here are a bit hilarious and sound similar to writing at a grade school level. Perhaps some of these examples are exaggerations because using too many cliches in scripts is already one of the greatest mistakes writers can make. Viewers say the writers repeat familiar catchphrases to such an extent that the scripts seem almost artificially produced. If there is some validity about cutting the writer system maybe it left ABC no choice but to use upstart authors who are more under pressure to churn out scripts five days a week.

Soap writing was no picnic anyway
