Emma Stone Dated Two Actors Before Meeting Her FiancéTim Burton and Johnny Depp have had a very fascinating and fruitful artistic relationship. Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass are full of strange pictures and surreal experiences that you think would be great source material for Burton yet it always seemed pointless to adapt that reach screens. It wasn’t a one-off take on the tale and certainly didn’t come close to the Disney Film. The fact that besides Depp, the cast is filled with talented actors like Burton’s wife Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway makes the movie’s disappointment even more confounding. In 2009, Burton criticized earlier film interpretations of the story saying at Comic-Con that I never had an emotional connection to seeing other film versions of it. It has always been just a girl who wanders from one insane character to another. Such critique will adequately describe Burton’s version with a predictable and boring perspective missing the warmth and sense of excitement present in the Disney film. 2.
The Scarlet Letter
If you’ve learned anything about this movie, you probably know that a happy ending was inserted by the filmmakers. As it turns out they changed the middle and very heart of the book as well as the beginning. That s all right. The question is not that the novel has been changed, but that it has been turned into something so trashy and incomprehensible that the critic Caryn James of the New York Times has said. 3.
Breakfast at Tiffany s
This may be a controversial addition to the list because Breakfast at Tiffany’s is considered by many to be a classic performance and Audrey Hepburn’s performance as Holly Golightly is perhaps the most respected iconic actress. Though Hepburn is incredibly beautiful and charming as the broken socialite this film just doesn’t do Truman Capote s novella justice. 4.
As I directed Lay Dying
James Franco wrote the screenplay and stars in this surreal adaptation of William Faulkner’s unadaptable novel about the tragic Bundren family that is traveling through Mississippi to bury the matriarch in her hometown as she requested. The novel is a beautiful example of the stream of consciousness writing, showing Faulkner at the top of his game, but turning the novel into a film was an ambitious project to say the least, and one that Franco was short of. The decision to make a split screen in pieces is just confusing, and the performance of Tim Blake Nelson as the patriarch Anse Bundren seems as if Franco gave a botched lobotomy to the great actor before tossing him into some overalls. The novel shifts frighteningly creepy and drenched in Southern Gothic signature style by Faulkner. The film is a long and tedious chore that clearly fires the characters suffering in the face of the viewer. 5. The Golden Compass
The first chapter of Philip Pullman’s popular young adult fantasy series His Dark Materials was adapted to film in 2007 as the film avoids religious conflict and philosophy at the core of The Golden Compass. The film tries to replace the book’s major questions with glamorous graphics and big stars like Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig and inevitably falls flat. Although it’s probably too much to ask for a big movie studio to pump millions into a kid’s movie that might promote atheism. The Catholic League argues it is anticatholic. Philip Pullman’s 1995 admirers said Peter Travers, a critic of Rolling Stone.
Jim Carrey’s 2000 live-action film is essentially the epitome of a disastrous adaptation. Carrey has gained some acclaim for his work and it’s a frightening one, but the content is totally out of place. There are scantily clad sex jokes Who s and a Celine Dion song over the credits to replace the lovely You re a Mean One Mr. Grinch. If you have any kind of appreciation for the book of Dr. Seuss then watching this film would make you nauseous. Theodore Geisel licensed his works for adaptation only very sparingly, including for the famous cartoon version of if the other awful Seuss adaptation Hollywood is responsible for Mike Myers taking on The Cat in the Hat. 7.
WatchmenNPR said Krasinski first heard Brief Interviews when pieces were used as stage monologs while he was in theater school, and they encouraged him to pursue acting rather than playwriting. Wallace’s words fall into Krasinski’s scenario but they re-square pegs. As the eccentric millionaire Jay Gatsby and Toby Maguire actors Leonardo Dicaprio is the Nick Carraway prism through which we see Gatsby and the Jazz Era. Director Baz Luhrmann is famous for such movies as Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge! Films which are meant as decadent spectacles. He gets the golden age spectacle but doesn’t get the criticism of it present in the great novel by Fitzgerald.
