Apple Insider claims that a patent has been issued to the company for a new type of camera sensor that could dramatically improve the accuracy with which the camera on the iPhone detects colors and how it works in low light. Patent No. 8988564cameras have been issued to Apple on most smartphones, using a single light sensor overlaid with a color filter array (CFA) divided between red and green and laid out in a grid. When capturing an image the sensor needs to recreate the image through a process called demosaicing based on the color samples from the filter. Quartz states that this leads to photos that are more blurred than in real life, because only where they are in the grid can the sensor pick up colours. The newly patented device of Apple therefore uses a cube of triangular prisms to split light into different green red and blue streams. Each of these is picked up by an individual color sensor that would result in more true-to-life images. It would also add more clarity to photos taken in low-light situations. Light splitting systems do not require processing or demo-making of color channels and thus optimize resolution of pixel arrays. Apple Insider states that imaging technology with three sensors is commonly found in “prosumer” video cameras. Although older 3-CCD cameras rely on the technology to accurately capture light and counteract the “wobble” effect seen with a single energy-efficient CMOS chip modern equipment uses global CMOS shutter modules and offers better low-light output and color accuracy. Apple’s architecture makes use of light splitting techniques close to those of Canon Panasonic Philips and others in current optics packages. Apple describes a cube arrangement of four identical polyhedrons, which meet at dichroic interfaces, for the splitter assembly described in the patent. Each interface uses a different optical coating to allow for the reflection or transmission of particular wavelengths of incident light to an adjacent tetrahedron. More Articles May 30 2015 Source: Getty Images If you’re like other Americans, you’re probably using several social networks to check in regularly on your mobile tablet or computer to see your friends posted photos that they uploaded shared videos and witty tweets. But have you ever wondered how many dollars you are spending on Facebook or Twitter all that time with their apps and websites? And how much do you do to LinkedIn when you re-network, or to Yahoo when you endlessly browse through your Tumblr dashboard? And how much are those places worth because of you in return? We’ve done some basic maths to find out how important your use of social media is to the companies behind your favorite social networks. To find this out we looked at two numbers: the revenue generated by each social network and the size of its user base, using data from the end of 2014 wherever possible. It provides a rough estimate of how much dollars the average user is generating for the company. For the vast majority of its sales, most social networks rely on ads. Yet some such as Facebook and LinkedIn often generate revenue by paying games or premium services to members. Calculating on the basis of total revenue (not just advertising revenue) helps to take into account those other user-dependent revenue streams. According to its fourth quarter reports business estimates and financials, Twitter’s income in 2014 was $1.4 billion, reporting that Twitter had 288 million active monthly users in 2014 and receiving $1.25 billion in advertising revenue. (Twitter also announced that, for the fourth quarter of 2014, timeline views reached 182 billion, an increase of 23 percent year-over-year and advertising revenue per thousand timeline views reached $2,37 in the fourth quarter of 2014, an increase of 60 percent year-over-year.) Dividing Twitter’s $1,4 billion by its 288 million active users, we hit revenue of $4,86 per user. Facebook does not publish precise Instagram figures. But in December 2014 Instagram revealed in a blog postanalyst that according to Mashable, Instagram would generate revenue of about $700 million in 2015 (and $5.8 billion in revenue in 2020). The same analysts say Instagram is worth about $33bn. Since we don’t have a figure from Facebook on how much Instagram earned in 2014 we’re going with Cowen Co.’s estimate of $700 million in sales in 2015 dividing it by the 300 million users Instagram announced and hitting a $2.33 per user revenue. Since purchasing the social network, Yahoo has remained largely quiet about Tumblr’s financials. But in October, the Wall Street Journal announced that Yahoo’s chief executive Marissa Mayer expects Tumblr to produce revenue of more than $100 million in 2015. Mayer also announced that Tumblr’s population has grown to 420 million users while the number of registered blogs has almost doubled to 206 million users. She clarified that her Tumblr user number comprises all users who are logged in and people who land on one of its blogs. Because we don’t have a number for Tumblr’s 2014 sales, we’re using Mayer’s $100 million revenue estimate for 2015 to divide it by Tumblr’s 420 million users and get $0.24 per user revenue. Snapchat is another social media player (although speculation abounds) where we rely on data short. In February, Fortune announced that Snapchat’s user basevalue was valued at up to $19 billion. As Bloomberg noted at the time since it was established in 2011 Snapchat’s valuation has skyrocketed. In 2013, Chief Executive Evan Spiegel turned down a $3 billion Facebook takeover bid and raised funds at last year’s $10 billion valuation. But we don’t know how much money Snapchat has in its infancy, particularly with its advertising infrastructure, so we can still quantify how valuable Snapchat’s average user is. Although total revenue from Facebook was $12.47 billion in 2014, the market cap is well over $200 billion. (And comparing the value to Facebook based on its market cap will make the company worth about $143.88.) But there are some interesting theories as to how this market trend, which affects a number of young tech firms, appears to play out. Explaining how Snapchat planned to make money Henry Blodget wrote for Business Insider about what s he s personally referred to as Gurley s Law” a theory laid out by Benchmark venture capitalist Bill Gurley in a report on the valuation of a small but quickly growing tech company that was trading at a stratospheric multiple of earnings. Gurley s Law is this” Blodget wrote At some point every successful tech company will trade at a normal earnings multiple ”say 20X-25X earnings.” Blodget says that Gurley s law doesn t mean that a tech company trading at a multiple higher than 20X or 25X is overvalued but when the company s growth has slowed to a more mature rate the multiples on the company s stock will also be normal.” Snapchat s valuation has only gone up since Blodget made those calculations. But the company seems as if it is on its way to generating some real revenue. AdWeek announced in January that for advertisements placed alongside their content, Snapchat is asking for brands for $750,000 a day publisher on Snapchat Discover can order between $50,000 and $100,000. All this is to say that social networks are nothing without their users but can change rapidly the ways social media companies monetize their user bases. And the popularity of a company putting costly ads in front of you or getting you to buy games gifts or premium services on its network does not only decide what it is worth, but also what it is worth to the social network.

That’s not to suggest he’s slowed down making movies; personally he’s consistently worked impressively. But his last five films all went straight to DVD before Death Wish and got terrible reviews from First Kill to Precious Cargo — the latter scored a 0 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes. The Film scored 17 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes in 2017. Next: Once again we really want to see this great comedic actor on top. 3.

Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey is an absolute comedy legend, but it’s been a long time since we’ve seen him on screen really excell. He was recently the topic of a brilliant Jim Andy documentary: The Brilliant Beyond. Beyond that, though in recent years he has not done so much partly because of personal tragedy in his life. While we don’t want Carrey to kick while he’s down, it’s clear that his film career needs some serious revitalization as was the case even while he’s been more involved. After all, the last four movies by Carrey were The Bad Batch Dumb and Dumber To Kick-Ass 2 and The Amazing Burt Wonderstone, all of which definitely were not deserving of his involvement. Mr. Popper’s Penguins have been great entertainment for children. Yet Carrey’s only movie that can honestly be considered great is I Love You Phillip Morris that was eight years ago, and six movies ago. Carrey previously appeared in 2016 in a Polish crime-thriller named Dark Crimes but that has not yet been released in the U.S. He’ll also be appearing in a Showtime series called Kidding in 2018 which will hopefully be his triumphant return. Next: Another comic star who hasn’t done too well recently.

Will Ferrell Clodagh Kilcoyne / Getty Images Just like Jim Carrey Will Ferrell is another funny actor who has recently had a string of failures. His last movie on Rotten Tomatoes was Daddy’s Home 2 which scored a 19 per cent. Before that, at the box office, the House had an 18 percent and was underperforming. Before The House there was another poor comedy, Zoolander 2 (23%) then the first Daddy’s Home (31%) and eventually Get Rough (29%). So the last movie that Ferrell was successful in was The Lego Movie that came out in 2014. Yet even in that he was only a face (except for one series of live-action), and was hardly the main draw. If you don’t consider the Anchorman 2 in 2013 was the last good live-action film Ferrell starred into and that was well-received. Next: This actor really fell off the map but he didn’t get many good roles even before he did. 5. Brendan Fraser

Brendan Fraser Universal Studios From the 1990s to the 2000s, Brendan Fraser went from being an action hero in The Mummy to playing comedy in George of the Jungle and Blast of the Past and even plunging into dramatic territory with the Oscar winner Crash. But he hasn’t made any kind of movie since 2014. His career was definitely down a track even when he was more successful, as he went 12 straight movies without receiving a fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Fraser’s last film earning decent reviews was 2008’s Journey to the Earth’s Core and even that was hardly a smash hit. Yet since then the former governor has been a lot of nothingburgers; anything from Escape Plan to Sabotage to Terminator Genisys was completely forgettable. We’re not waiting for Schwarzenegger’s Oscar-caliber pictures but now it’s been around five years since he’s been in something worth watching at all. Next: This major star now has four bad films in a row. 7.

Matt Damon

Perhaps we’re a bit harsh on Matt Damon; after all, it’s been only three years since his last great movie The Martian. Yet he is a decent enough performer that worthy of notice is the amount of stinkers he has now generated in a row. He appeared in four back-to-back disappointments since the impressive The Martian Damon: Jason Bourne The Great Wall Suburbicon and most recently Downsizing. In reality, his cameo in Thor is the best thing he has done in years: Ragnarok. We’re not sure Damon will bounce back. But if so, we’ll definitely look back on that time of his career as a rough patch. Next: Matt Damon’s close friend did not have a great few years, either.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner Pascal Le Segretain / Getty Images Matt Damon’s writing partner Ben Affleck hasn’t done very well lately either. Affleck has been tied up with the DC Universe for the past couple of years, but Batman must have seemed like a dream come true that the two DC movies he’s starred in have been terrible so far. Since becoming the caped crusader, Affleck has also been in a few non-Batman movies, but they were quite mediocre: Live By Night and The Accountant. It’s been four years after Gone Girl in 2014 that Affleck has really inspired critics. Next: This actor may have been thought to have stopped working years ago but he’s still relatively active. 9. Hayden Christensen

Hayden Christensen 20th Century Fox You might have thought that Hayden Christensen had just retired after the prequels of the Star Wars had finished. But no, since then, he has been working at a steady pace participating in almost nothing but explosives. Christensen has been in 11 movies since Revenge of the Sith and on Rotten Tomatoes every single one of them has a score of rotten. His last few movies were First Kill (14%) 90 Minutes in Heaven (24%) American Heist (13%), and Outcast (5%). Next: The actor acted in one of 2017’s worst plays, and one of 2016’s worst. 10.

Gerard Butler

| Warner Bros. ImagesThis says a lot about Steven Seagal’s career status that you actually didn’t even realize he is still making movies successfully. Granted Seagal’s films were never the best of the year, but there was a time when he consistently pumped out entertaining action flicks that overtook the box office like Hard to Kill On Dangerous Ground and Under Seige. Seagal has been appearing in 13 films since 2010, but each of them went direct-to-video — from Born to Raise Hell to A Good Man — and not a single one on IMDB has a score of no more than 5.0 out of 10. Next: Seven subpar movies in a row have featured this great actor. 12.

Michael Fassbender Michael Fassbender Daniel Leal-Olivas / AFP / Getty Images Michael Fassbender is an amazing actor that’s why it’s particularly disappointing that he’s been in a truly phenomenal film for too long. He appeared in three movies in 2017: Song to Song Alien: Covenant and The Snowman. Although the film was fairly disappointing, only Covenant managed to squeak out a fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes in any way. Before that, Fassbender was a poor comic book movie X-Men in the terrible video game adaptation: Apocalypse. Three years have passed before Fassbender always excelled like he had Steve Jobs in 2015. Obviously it wasn’t so long ago but for an actor like Fassbender, seven bad or mediocre movies in a row are relatively significant. Next: This actor has gone from becoming a star in one of the 1980s’ biggest movies to making little-seen movies.

Val Kilmer Andy Kropa / Stringer / Getty pictures The career of Val Kilmer was on fire throughout the 1980s, appearing in films of the caped Batman Forever crusader. He did some solid work even in the 2000s, especially in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Yet his reputation has fallen dramatically. Kilmer has been starring in 19 critically reviled films since 2010, many of which went direct to video including Seven Below and Blood Out. The last movie he starred in getting something close to positive reviews was the 2012 Breathless that has 60 percent on Rotten Tomatoes (but only with five reviews). Next: One of these days we would love to see this comic actor making a comeback. 14.14. Eddie Murphy

Eddie Murphy Paramount Pictures It shouldn’t be so difficult for someone as talented as Eddie Murphy to land a role in a film that allows him to show off his skills. But Dreamgirls was his last le
gitimately good film in 2006. His films have been Norbit Shrek the Third Meet Dave Imagine The Shrek Forever After Tower Heist A Thousand Words and Mr. Church since then. After a four year break, Mr. Church was Murphy’s return to acting. Yet unfortunately reviewers were not much more childlike to that movie than to his other recent work. 15.

Adrien Brody

Brody’s research has included Bullet Head Enemy Territory Manhattan Night Backtrack Dragon Blade American Heist and Third Person over the past few years. All those films earned Rotten Tomatoes a rotten score. February 24 2020 Kylie Cosmetics seems to be adding another significant achievement to its long list of achievements. For his over-the-top action scenes of offensive comedy and utter lack of focus on anything remotely resembling coherent storytelling, the director behind the controversial Transformers films has been the target of an immense backlash in recent years. Nevertheless, with his four Transformers films raising $3.7 billion globally, his films continue to pull in hundreds of millions of dollars around the globe. Despite Bay’s critical derision, his filmography is t absolutely without its stronger points. Here are five films he’s directed that are actually watchable “shockingly or not.” Granted we’re not claiming all of these are cinematic achievement masterpieces just that Bay can produce thrilling escapist experiences when he’s trying to do so.

1. Bad Boys (1995) Bad Boys Sony Before Will Smith became one of the biggest movie stars in the world, Bay matched him for this buddy cop action comedy with the then-hot comedy star Martin Lawrence. The two men are playing police officers who are forced to swap identities as part of a ruse to take down a Miami drug lord. Bickering has plenty of chemistry like an old married couple, Smith and Lawrence, and Bay delivers a range of excellent action set pieces that helped the film spawn a sequel with a third film now on its way. 2.

The Rock (1996)

Perhaps Bay’s most beloved directorial endeavor is pitting Nicolas Cage’s FBI agent and Sean Connery’s federal prisoner “the first man ever to escape from Alcatraz Island” against Ed Harris’ rogue U.S. general. The film combines a wry sense of humor with well-crafted scenes of action like no other Bay film and its three leads help to further elevate the content with their tremendous onscreen talents. For some it may be a guilty pleasure but this is Bay at its finest for the most part. 3.

4. Armageddon (1998) The Island (2005)

The Island Dreamworks The Island’s storyline may be a little too similar to sci-fi classics like THX 1138 and Logan’s Ride, but what the film lacks in pure originality is mirrored in its powerful visuals and winning cast led by Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson. Based in a future world where the rich can build organ harvesting clones for the movie “the first Bay film not made by Jerry Bruckheimer” is not without its social commentary, even though it is more concerned with overblown explosions. At least this isn’t almost as offensive as some of Bay’s other work. 5. Pain Gain (2013)

Pain Gain Paramount Pictures While Bay is much better known for his efforts in film, this dark comedy has proved capable of delivering quality work in other genres. Centering on the true story of a bodybuilder community, the film polarizes critics with its extreme violence and shallow pessimistic outlook. Nevertheless the irony in it worked better for some than others, giving stars like Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg (who would go on to headline Bay’s Transformers: Age of Extinction) the chance to flex their comedic muscles in a way that they had t before. @CrookedTable July 14, 2014 Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) is scheduled on Tuesday July 15 to report earnings.
