However, they are a much-needed lifeline for those in the music industry who have struggled in recent years to generate a small amount or even any income whatsoever with free downloads and applications like Spotify (although membership sites like Spotify actually pay artists – in 2015 they paid the music industry $1.8 billion). Being a Musician is a tough time. However, Youtube could have provided the sector with a new source of money making. Music revenues are expected to double over the next ten years according to some rather optimistic pundits. But this is of course just some’s view. Some think there’s still a long way to go and Youtube should pay artists far more. You need to get lots of views to earn any revenue at all. You get about $2000 in revenue for every million views and then Youtube will take up a percentage of that. Other applications like Spotify, are going to pay more. But others would say any revenue generation is better than no revenue at all and it should be welcomed by the music industry. The thing everyone needs to remember is that subscription-based services bring direct revenue to the site, while advertising revenue is more indirect, so Youtube can’t pay as much. The sums simply aren’t adding up for them. They argue that both have a place, and that artists and recording professionals should be able to use both systems and generate revenue from each. Youtube is now making considerable efforts to improve relations with the music industry and they have hired music executive Lyor Cohen as their Global Head of Music to smooth broad-level relationships. The labels and the musicians are in between a hard place and a rock. Generally speaking, in terms of advertising, it is highly likely that most companies will choose to move their advertising channels away from older, more conventional platforms such as billboards print radio and television, which tend to be quite expensive towards online formats including Youtube. It is where people are so it makes sense to do so and it will also cost them a lot less meaning to be able to do more than they currently can. This is likely to help boost Youtube’s revenue but it will be up to them how much of this they first pass on to the people in charge of the videos – the musicians and the record labels.
