Kenyatta University suspends learning for three days to mourn accident victims

Kenyatta University has suspended learning for three days to Mourn Accident Victims as confirmed by Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. Waceke Wanjohi.

The news follows a visit by the University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Paul Wainaina who checked on students admitted at the Moi County Referral Hospital. Students who sustained serious injuries were on Tuesday airlifted to Nairobi for specialized treatment.

At the same time, bodies of those who succumbed to the accident have been moved to Kenyatta University Funeral Home pending identification by their families.

Speaking on the news was Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura who noted that at the time of the accident two of the institution busses were heading to the Coast for an academic trip.

The second bus has since been advised to return as the trip remains suspended.

In the unfortunate incident at Maungu area along the Mombasa-Nairobi road, 11 students were confirmed dead as 21 others sustained injuries caused by the coalition between the bus and heavy trailer.

“Two buses had departed from the university for an academic trip at the Coast; one bus arrived safely, while the other was involved in a collision with a heavy truck around 6 pm near Maungu area, Taita Taveta County.

The planned trip has been cancelled and the students who had arrived for the trip have been recalled to the institution in a show of solidarity with the affected comrades.” said Mwaura
