ODPP clarifies position in the murder of Meru blogger Sniper

The office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) has clarified its position in the murder of Meru Blogger Daniel Muthiani Benard well known as Sniper.

Through a statement, ODPP noted that the matter is now in the hands of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) after they completed there fair share of duty.

“Owing to the fact that the whereabouts of abducted person was unknown, the DCI, through the ODPP applied criminal miscellaneous application no. E116 of 2023 seeking custodial orders pending completion of investigations,” they said

They continued by saying that they moved to court seeking custodial sentencing of the prime suspect but instead the court released him on Ksh 20,000 cash bail.

According to ODPP, once the body of the blogger was found, it was the duty of DCI to investigate the incident and submit the inquiry file to them, something that they are yet to do.

“The ODPP has not received the inquiry file into the offence of murder up to date,” they said

The statement follows a tweet from blogger Dennis Itumbi who questioned ODPP’s delay in giving direction into the matter.

“”So, a SUSPECT in the abduction of SNIPER was arrested, but ODPP did NOT give directions on how to proceed. DCI told court they were waiting for DPP. Why the delay Mr. DPP? Why is DPP silent internally and publicly?” said Itumbi
