Senator Okiya Omtata objects relocation of Busia stadium

Senator Okiya Omtata hs objected planned relocation of Busia stadium from its current location to the Busia Agricultural Training Centre (ATC) grounds.

The Senator through a letter faulted Saviour Panyako, Busia County chief officer for Youth, Sports and Gender for not involving the public before a decision was made as required by law.

According to the Senator, there is a reason why public participation is important as what is spoken can be taken into consideration when making a decision.

Panyako was further accused of involving a few county government representative to the hearing through a letter thus making it biased. Omtata pointed out that other outlets could have been used including TV, radio and newspapers.

The letter targeting institutions has very limited reach and cannot substitute for formal advertisements placed in the print media, TV, and radio.

It is also not possible for my office to fully engage with the proposal because the letter is not accompanied by any studies showing the viability of the proposal, which made the County Executive endorse it,” said Omtatah.

Okiya Omtata noted that the current Busia Agricultural Training Centre (ATC) grounds can be used to build important infrastructures including a university.

He continued by questioning the criteria used to select the training centre other than the many other places the 20,000 stadium could have been relocated.
