Former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero and KRA settle Ksh 427m tax dispute

Former Nairobi Governor Dr. Evans Kidero has settled a Ksh 427 million tax dispute with Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) out of court.

In the new arrangement, the former Nairobi Governor will now pay KRA Ksh.19.4 million as agreed between the two parties.

The row between the taxman and Kidero began back in 2016 when an audit was conducted on the former Governor’s businesses and accounts from 2011 to 2015 and it was established that he had tax arrears amounting to Ksh 680 million.

He later challenged the finding claiming that out of the money accounted for, ksh 423 million came from donations during his campain.

KRA moved to court to block Dr. Evans Kidero’s claims saying that he lacked evidence to prove the money was from donations. KRA was issued a green light to move forward and collect the money.

Under the recent arrangement, the agreed Ksh 19.4 million comprises of Ksh 12,038,982 million in taxes, a penalty of Ksh 2,407,796 and interest of Ksh 5,036.405 million.
