Seun Kuti Arrested for Alleged Violence Against Police

Seun Kuti was arrested for alleged violence against police. Kuti, the youngest son of Afrobeat musician Fela Kuti, appeared in court on Tuesday after being arrested for allegedly attacking a police officer.

A video that surfaced over the weekend shows Kuti arguing with an unarmed police officer on a busy Lagos motorway.

Kuti, 40, said in a tweet that the cop plotted to hurt him and his family, but he did not elaborate. A Lagos court dismissed prosecutors’ request to keep Kuti for 21 days. This was according to his lawyer, Femi Falana.

In Nigerian law, if convicted of assaulting a police officer, Kuti may face up to three years in prison.

The Grammy-nominated Kuti surrendered to authorities on Monday, escorted by his lawyer. This was after Nigeria’s national police commissioner ordered his detention. Kuti has been arrested, according to a statement from Lagos police spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin.

Kuti, known for his music advocacy and outspoken criticism of the government, has been a passionate champion against police violence.
Seun Kuti has performed for audiences all over the world with his late father’s old band, Egypt 80. He has traveled extensively in the United States, France, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

In January 2012, Kuti actively engaged in the Occupy Nigeria rallies in Nigeria over President Goodluck Jonathan’s policy of removing fuel subsidies. Kuti voiced the outro of a song with the lyrics on Jidenna’s 85 to Africa album in 2019.”I believe the time has come for an African-powered highway.” A highway connecting the Diaspora and the Motherland. A global route for Africans everywhere to rediscover themselves. To remember that the only thing that unifies black people around the world, the only thing we all have in common, is that we are all from Africa.”In November 2020, he led the rebirth of his father’s defunct political party, Movement of the People, with the purpose of registering it with Nigeria’s electoral agency, the Independent National Electoral Commission.
