President Ruto responds to the ongoing destruction of baobab trees

President William Ruto has issued orders to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry to look into the destruction of Baobab trees in Kilifi County.

Taking on social media, the Head of State called on the Ministry to ensure that the uprooting procedure is in line with the Convention on Biodiversity and the Nagoya Protocol.

“I have instructed the Ministry of Environment and Forestry to look into the ongoing uprooting of Baobab trees in Kilifi County to ensure that it sits within the Convention on Biodiversity and the Nagoya Protocol.” Said, President Ruto

The Head of State continued by saying that the process should include adequate and Equitable Benefit Sharing formulae with Kenyans, in addition, to be in line with the government plans of planting 15 billion trees in the next 10 years.

“There must be adequate authorization and an equitable benefit sharing formula for Kenyans. Further, the exercise must be in line with the Government’s agenda of planting 15 billion trees in the next 10 years.” Said, President Ruto

The news by the President comes at a time when Kenyans took to social media begging for answers as to what was happening in Kilifi County.

They called on the government to stop the exercise with immediate effect as it was destroying the environment at a time when the world is combating climate change.
