NCIC set to meet Facebook officials on Monday

National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) is now set to meet officials from Facebook on Monday in a consultative meeting involving the Interior Ministry and the ICT ministry.

“We have therefore invited Facebook, Communications Authority of Kenya, the ministries of ICT and that of Interior so that we can talk and agree on the way forward,” said Rev, Kobia.

The news was confirmed by Ncic Chairman Rev, Dr Samuel Kobia after the commission issued a seven day ultimatum for the social media giants to pull down some hate speech posts which can cause unrest ahead of the elections.

NCIC further warned Facebook of pending suspension if they failed to clean up their platform in the said durations, allegations that were denied by ICT CS Joe Mucheru and his Interior counterpart Dr. Fred Matiang’i.

“The NCIC has met with representatives of Facebook and other social media platforms. But from April we have had engagements with Facebook and we have told them to comply with Kenya’s Laws,” said Rev, Kobia.

The NCIC chairman noted the huge following behind Facebook terming it a powerful tool that can be used to incite Kenyans ahead of the elections.

He was speaking as he called on President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy President William Ruto to take it slow on the bitter exchange of words in public forums. He urged the two leaders to come together for the sake of peace.
