Eliud Kipchoge successfully defends Olympic tittle in Tokyo

Eliud Kipchoge has once again made history and successfully defended his Olympic tittle by winning a gold medal in Tokyo on Sunday.

Kipchoge won the men’s marathon in 2 hours 8 minutes and 38 seconds ahead of Abdi Negeeye of Netherlands and Bashir Abi of Belgium who won silver and bronze medals respectively.

Fellow Kenyan Lawrence Cherono came fourth in 2 hours 10 minutes and 2 seconds as Kenyans wrapped up their tittle challenge at the Olympics bagging four gold medals in total.

Speaking after the marathon, Kipchoge noted that he has fulfilled a legacy winning back to back Olympic tittle.

He continued by saying that it is the dream of every athlete to win in the Olympics and that it was a special day for him thanks to the preparation he had made prior to the marathon.

“The Olympic dream is a special dream. For every athlete here, it has taken a lifetime of preparation to get to this point. Today I lived my Olympic dream. I always say that sport is like life, whereby you can win and lose. But today was a day where I won and get to say I successfully defended my Olympic title.” Said Kipchoge.

Congratulating Kipchoge was ODM party leader Raila Odinga who termed him as the greatest marathoner of all time.

“He committed to retain his Olympic title and has delivered the Gold Medal in an exemplary fashion leaving the entire field in the distance.” Said Hon. Raila Odinga.

Other gold medalist for Kenya include Emmanuel Korir in 800 meters, Faith Kipyegon in 1500 meters and Peres Jepchirchir in the women’s marathon.
