The Chief Minister said that Maithili Sharan Gupt’s creations are an invaluable heritage of Indian tolerance that will continue to inspire generations.

NEW DELHI — On the occasion of Maithili Sharan Gupt’s birth anniversary, the Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel paid rich tributes to the poet.

Mr. Baghel recalled his works, saying that it influenced large class of a dialect about national and social consciousness.
“He was especially sensitive to the problems being faced during his times. His poetry was overflowing with public awakening and moral consciousness,” the chief minister said, while lauding the poetic figure.

The Chhattisgarh CM went on to say, “Given the impact of his creations during the freedom struggle, Mahatma Gandhi had given him the title of National Poet.”

“Gupt ji was conferred many awards including Padma Bhushan for his timeless literature,” according to the CM.

Maithili Sharan Gupt (August 3, 1886 – December 12, 1964) was a prominent modern Hindi poet. He is regarded as one of the founders of Khari Boli (plain dialect) poetry, writing in the dialect at a period when other Hindi poets preferred the Braj Bhasha dialect.

He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest (then second highest) civilian honour.
Mahatma Gandhi bestowed the title of Rashtra Kavi on him for his work Bharat-Bharati, which was extensively referenced throughout India’s independence movement.
