Thomas Hickey

Thomas Robert Hickey is a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He plays the position of defenseman for the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was born on the 8th of February, 1989 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

The Career of Thomas Hickey

Thomas completed his high school at the Edge School in Calgary, Alberta. He joined the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in the 2004-05 season. There, he played a limited role in 5 games. In the 2005-06 season, he tallied 28 points as a rookie and later in the draft year, he improved to 9 goals and 50 points. He then got into the selection by the Los Angeles Kings in the first round during the off-season as the fourth overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

Hickey signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Kings on 17th of July, 2007 and attended the training camp. He later came back to the Thunderbirds for a junior season on the 21st of September, 2007. He was injured during the 2008-09 season and again had another shoulder injury that required surgery which kept him off the ice till April of 2010. Hickey again sprained his ankle. Hence, he was unable to play again until the semi-finals against the Hershey Bears in the 2009-10 season. He got his name as an alternate captain during his time with the Monarchs.

Hickey was claimed off waivers from the Kings by the New York Islanders on the 15th of January, 2013 and he immediately joined the training camp. His NHL debut with the islanders was on the 27th of January, 2013 against the Winnipeg Jets at the MTS Center. He scored his first NHL goal against the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell center during overtime on the 21st of February, 2013.

More About Hickey

Thomas Hickey scored against the Washington Capitals in the 2015-16 season with the help of which the Islanders were able to join the playoffs in the 2016 Stanley Cup playoffs. He scored his first playoff goal in 3rd game in overtime against the Florida Panthers. Hickey later signed a four-year contract with the Islanders on the 1st of July, 2018.

Hickey has also contributed to his country on an international level. He got into the selection to represent Canada for the 2008 World Junior Championships in the Czech Republic. He also secured a gold medal. Thomas made his participation in the 2009 World Junior Championships in Ottawa as the team captain. He got into selection as Canada’s Player of the game in a 5-1 win against Germany. Canada beat Sweden and won the finals for the third year straight and captured a WJHC gold medal.
