Steven Stamkos – A Canadian Professional Ice Hockey Player, Representing Tampa Bay Lightning, Who Kicked Off His Career as Sarnia Sting Selected Him in The 2006 OHL Draft

Steven Stamkos is a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He plays center position for his team and is also a captain for the Tampa Bay Lightning. He was born on the 7th of February, 1990 in Markham, Ontario, Canada and is of Macedonian and Scottish descent.

The Career of Steven Stamkos

Stamkos grew up in Unionville, Ontario. He played for the Markham Waxers in the Eastern AAA Hockey League of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA). Stamkos won 8 OMHA title in a row in minor hockey. He also led his Waxers Club to the OHL Cup title in March of 2006. He played with the Markham Waxers in the 2003 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. Stamkos attended Central Park Public School in Markham, Ontario. Later, when he was drafted by the OHL’s Sarnia Sting, he attended Northern Collegiate Institute and Vocational School in Sarnia. Sarnia Sting Selected him for first overall in the 2006 OHL Draft following the season with the minor Waxers.

He recorded a total of 92 points over 63 games as a junior rookie. He had a chance to play with many famous NHLers during his minor hockey career. Stamkos got his name to the OHL Second All-Rookie Team. He won the Bobby Smith Trophy as the OHL’s scholastic player of the year for his academic efforts off the ice. Steven was ranked top throughout the campaign by the NHL Central Scouting Bureau and International Scouting Services in his NHL draft-eligible season in the 2007-2008 season and also won the CHL’s Top Draft Prospect Award.

Tampa Bay also selected him as first overall at the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. He signed a 3 year, entry-level contract with the Lightning on 29th of July, 2008. Steven was centered at the promotional efforts including a website with the slogan “Seen Stamkos”. He played in his first NHL game in Prague, the Czech Republic at the starting of season 2008-2009 and scored his first goal against Ryan Miller of the Buffalo Sabres.

Stamkos recorded the first NHL hat-trick of his career after 54 games on the 17th of February, 2009. He became the first rookie in lighting history to score a hat-trick in a game. He was also a second-youngest player in NHL history to record a hat-trick. Stamkos finished the season with 19 points in his final 20 games. He has a total of 23 goals and 46 points in his rookie season.

Stamkos scored a total of 51 goals and 44 assists in the 2009-2010 season and obtained 95 points. During his 2010-11 season, he scored a total of 45 goals, 46 assists, and 91 points. In the 2011-12 season, Stamkos scored a total of 60 goals which is his highest in the NHL and 37 assists. Similarly, he scored 29 total goals and 28 assists in the following season. He scored 25 goals and 15 assists in the 2013-14 season and 43 goals and 29 assists in the next season. Steven scored 36 goals and 28 assists in the 2015-16 season and 9 goals and 11 assists which is his lowest scores in the entire NHL Season in 2016-17. He then scored 27 goals and 59 assists in the 2017-18 season and 45 goals and 53 assists in the 2018-19 season.

Stamkos has played internationally for Canada in the 2008 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, 2009 Men’s World Ice Hockey Championships, IIHF World Championships, 2010 Winter Olympics, 2013 World Championship and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. He has also signed several sponsorships for big companies such as Nike, Tissot Watches and Sport Chek.
