Editors Edge: Edit like your life depends on it

Designing a post or creating a promotional video highlighting an event is no simple task. The tools and methods one must know to successfully create a post worthy of being the face of an organization or simply a post that grabs the attention of on-lookers is paramount. Which is why RACSLIIT, and the Interact Club of St. Thomas Preparatory School took the initiative to organize Editor’s Edge.

Editor’s Edge, organized by Rotaract Club of SLIIT and Interact Club of St. Thomas Preparatory School took place on the 20th of January 2024 at SLIIT premise. Editor’s Edge was a 7-hour workshop to help young interactors and rotaractors alike to fine tune and develop their photo and video editing skills. The workshop covered the basic tool use, advanced editing methods as well as industry standards used in the field of mass media.

The first half of Editor’s Edge focused on tools, principles and theories related to photo editing. Now, you might think it would have been a very technical session focused solely on work. My dear readers, you couldn’t be more wrong. The session was conducted by Rtr. Vimeth Athukorala, one of the co-directors of the PR/IT Avenue of RACSLIIT, who I might add is someone who likes to make deadpan jokes. The session began with an introduction to basic theories used in photo editing followed up by a thorough practical session on how to use Adobe Photoshop. Yes, I know that it may sound boring but trust me he was teeing up for something much funnier. After the lectures we were all subjected to a free-for-all photoshop battle royale. The goal was to create hilarious edits, but they provided us with the materials. The material was what made this funny as heck, it was 2 photos of the co-directors. With no bars to hold, our young editors went to town on those images. This led to some hilarious outcomes.

The second segment of Editor’s Edge was a session on video editing conducted by the co-director of the PR/IT Avenue of RACSLIIT, Rtr Themiya Alwis, someone who shares a very good sense of humor. The video editing part of the workshop kicked off with a hands-on session that allowed attendees to familiarize themselves with Adobe Premiere Pro. Within the video editing part of the workshop, attendees were taught on how to create a simple, challenging and a complicated video using the most basic tools provided in the software. Might I add he also provided his own video productions which was to everyone’s awe and admiration.

At the end of the day, I can say without a shadow of a doubt that all participants thoroughly enjoyed Editor’s Edge and indeed, it was a fun and very knowledgeable session. So, shout out to our PR/IT directors for making Editor’s Edge a success but more importantly, an enjoyable workshop for everyone.
