Gov Fayemi visits families of Ekiti farmers killed by Fulani herdsmen

Kayode Fayemi, governor of Ekiti, has condemned the killing of two farmers by suspected herders in Isaba Ekiti, Ikole LGA.

The victims were said to have been shot dead on their farm on Friday.

The incident had created tension in the community, leading to a protest by residents.

Sunday Abutu, police spokesperson in the state, had said the clash was preceded by a disagreement between farmers and herders.

Commenting on the incident, Fayemi described the killing as one too many and assured the victims’ families that perpetrators will be brought to book.

“Yesterday, two of our farmers from Isaba Ekiti, Mr Toyin Akeju known locally as Jisoro and Mr Yusuf Onuche were found dead on the farms with wounds from gunshots suspected to have been fired by Bororo herdsmen. This, understandably, generated a lot of anger in the community,” Fayemi said in a tweet on Sunday.

“This morning, I visited the families of the deceased in the community. In offering commiserations of the government and all our people, I reassured them that we will get to the bottom of this sad occurrence and bring all the criminals involved to book.

“This is one killing too many and we must do all we can to protect all citizens. May the souls of the departed rest in peace. Amen.”

In a bit to douse the clashes between farmers and herders,  governors of south-west states, in January, banned open grazing in the region.
