Akinyi Obala from 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days season 3 recently shared a post on Instagram with a cryptic caption saying she now understands why the first year of marriage is the hardest. Akinyi, who is from Kenya, appeared on Before the 90 Days with Benjamin Taylor from Arizona in 2019. The two met online and are now considered married in both of their home countries.
Benjamin, a single father, flew to Kenya to meet Akinyi. Upon arrival, he was shocked to learn that once Akinyi’s parents approved of him and he negotiated a proper bride price for her, he would automatically be considered married to Akinyi in Kenya and not just engaged. Initially, he was concerned by this because his young son in the United States had not met Akinyi, and he didn’t know if they would get along if he brought her back to the United States. Benjamin also did not have enough money to give Akinyi’s family for the bride price. The end of 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days season 3 showed Benjamin proposing to Akinyi and making a deal with Akinyi’s father that he would pay part of the bride price and continue to send them the rest once he went back to the United States. The couple was not able to get married in the United States for a while due to the COVID-19 pandemic but eventually tied the knot in the United States April 2021.
On her Instagram account, Akinyi posted a series of photos of herself alongside a caption that started with, “The first year of marriage is the hardest.” The 90 Day Fiancé alum went on to explain that she heard people say that all the time before she was married, and although she didn’t know what it meant before, she does now. She added that the first year of marriage determines whether a not a couple will last. She ended the cryptic caption by saying, “And I’m just seven months in.” Akinyi did not provide any context in the caption about what exactly she was referring to or why her marriage has been hard.
Followers of the Kenyan graphic designer took to the comment section to reply to her claim that the first year of marriage is the hardest, with many disagreeing. One commenter said that she has been married for 11 years and does agree with the sentiment, saying that “the first year doesn’t define how your marriage will play out.” Akinyi replied to the 90 Day Fiancé fan’s comment and said that she “needed to hear this.”
Akinyi’s cryptic message about how the first year of marriage is the hardest will definitely raise questions among viewers about how she and Benjamin are doing in their marriage. Akinyi left her family behind and moved to another country fairly recently, and that alone is enough to cause tension. 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days fans will have to stay tuned to see if Akinyi shares more updates on her marriage in future social media posts.
