Thursday * My Craft Table

Today on my craft table am posting about my long history of quilting in my family. My Mom was a wonderful seamstress and my Grandmother and Aunts where big quilters. I learned at there knees’ or under the table hiding. I Quilt for special people for special occasions : new house, new baby, wedding, anniversary gifts for family and friends.

Why is quilting important? The purpose of quilting is to both secure the three layers of the quilt so that it does not shift over time and to provide a decorative element to the finished project. Traditionally, quilting stitches are made with white thread or in colors to match the fabric.

What is the symbolism of a quilt? In most of the earlier quilt stories which were published in the 1840’s, quilts symbolized the domestic sphere and all acceptable womanly endeavors. The quilts were cherished objects and the quilters were kind and loving, representing all that was wonderful about being a woman

My Grandma and Aunts quilt

This quilt is well used and loved in my house. And have kept many generations warm in my family.

My Quilts :

This is a picture of my first quilt I made for my grandmother for her nursing home bed. In her favorite colors and done in cotton. It was from a quilt kit I bought at Jo Ann fabrics. Its 20 years old and shows some wear and tear. Needs a little repair work.

Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary Quilt :

This is a small signature quilt I made for my Mom and Dad 50th anniversary . The applique floral flowers came off of my Mom’s wedding dress. I had mailed out empty squares for quest to sign before giving the gift to my parents/

HOW TO PREPARE FABRIC AND SET THE INK : Pima micron or sharpie markers

  • First, make sure the fabric has been washed so that there’s no sizing or other chemicals to interfere with ink absorption. Some quilters also recommend heavily starching the fabric, saying that minimizes bleeding and increases absorption.
  • Stabilize the fabric for writing by adhering a strip of masking or painters tape to the back, by pressing freezer paper onto the back or by laying the fabric on very fine sandpaper.
  • Once you’ve written on the fabric, let it sit overnight, then set it with heat. Heat setting https://lovebugstudios.com/how-to-heat-set-sakura-pigma-pens-on/

Sixty Years quilt : wedding ring quilt

The Double Wedding Ring quilt pattern has long been a symbol of love and romance with its interlocking rings symbolizing marriage. The quilt was traditionally made by mothers and grandmothers for their children and given as gifts on their wedding day or anniversaries

Made with my Mom favorite colors . And I used a quilt template to make the circles. Lisa
