On my food blog is my delious Honey Cake . I recipe lent to me from my cousin David it’s the perfect celebration cake for the Jewish New Year that begins Friday evening.
Known in Hebrew as ʿougat dvash (literally, honey cake) the word lekach is Yiddish. Lekach is one of the symbolically significant foods traditionally eaten by Ashkenazi Jews at Rosh Hashanah in hopes of ensuring a sweet New Year.
Honey Cake
- 1 cup honey
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 4 large eggs eggs
- 2 teaspoons grated orange zest
- 1 cup orange juice
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 3 teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch pan..Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon. Set aside.In a large bowl, combine sugar, honey, oil, eggs and orange zest. Beat in the flour mixture alternately with the orange juice, mixing just until incorporated. Pour batter into prepared pan.Bake in the preheated oven for 40 to 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool.
