A Workshop on Processing and Characterization of High Temperature Materials (PCHTML)
8 th – 9th September, 2023 NKN-407, Block – 9, IIT Patna
Organized by: Materials’ (Ma) Process (P) – Structure (S) correlations Laboratory, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department, IIT Patna
Convener: Dr. Anirban Chowdhury
The short-term course aims to enlighten researchers in the core and allied field of High temperature materials (metals, ceramics, glass etc) about the principles and practices concerning their processing and subsequent characterization tools and techniques employed for the assessment of microstructure and properties. The theme is centered on the fact how the processing modifies the structural and functional properties of the systems.
About the Workshop – The Processing and Characterization of High Temperature Materials (PCHTML) workshop in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (MME) department at IIT Patna, aims to showcase the latest developments on the process-structure correlations in two different classes on high temperature materials; metals and alloys (Day-1) and ceramics and glass (Day-2). The workshop also intends to provide live tutorial sections on characterisations involving high temperature materials (via Rietveld, Raman spectroscopy, etc.), demonstrations highlighting latest developments in high temperature characterisation units (e.g., thermal analysis). About Metallurgical & Materials Engg. Dept. The Department of Materials Science and Engineering was established in the year 2012 and was renamed as Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (MME) in 2018. The department focuses on the fundamental and engineering aspects of conventional metallurgy, ceramics, polymers, and composites. Apart from the vibrant teaching activity, the department also aims to train students (via various ongoing research activities financially supported by Govt. and private industrial organizations) with the fundamentals and expertise of design, synthesis, characterize, testing, and production of various materials along with the knowledge of new technologies in production and processing of new and advanced engineering materials. The MAPS laboratory in MME department primarily works on the investigation of PROCESS-STRUCTURE relationship of high-temperature materials at different length scales. This is usually carried out via probing into synthesis (via materials chemistry routes) and processing (e.g., consolidation, sintering, shaping, and etc.) issues for nanoparticles, oxides, ceramics, etc. and try to understandthe complexities involved in the process. The investigationmethods include a variety of structural characterizationtools. The final objective of MAPS laboratory is toprovide/come up with a sustainable process with theoption of industrial scalability.
Topics Covered in the Workshop
- Process modelling of high temperature materials(e.g., steel, glass)
- Process-structure correlation in high temperaturematerials and their impact on structure, microstructure, texture and functions
- Characterisations of the end product via suitabletools e.g., thermal, Rietveld, Raman spectroscopy, etc. (separate sessions would involve live tutorials)
- Latest scientific developments portraying the role ofprocess modifications in obtaining a novel product
- Failure analysis and case studies involving hightemperature processing operations
Reasons to Attend the Workshop•
To connect yourself with the current and futureadvancements involving processing of variousclasses of high temperature materials (e.g., metals, ceramics and glass)
• To enrich your process wisdom by learning howsignificantly process parameters can influence thestructural and functional properties of materials
• To hone your characterisation skills involving hightemperatures via live tutorials• To expand your network with distinguishedacademicians, researchers and industryprofessionals across the country.
