A teenager has been charged with a hate crime after assaulting an Israeli student with a stick on Columbia University’s campus earlier this week.

Maxwell Friedman, a 19-year-old who, according to several media reports, uses she/her pronouns, allegedly attacked a 24-year-old Israeli student with a stick. This took place after the student encountered her ripping posters of Israelis held hostage by Hamas off the walls near Columbia’s Butler Library.

“F— you! F— all of you prick crackers!” Friedman screamed at the student and his friends, according to the criminal complaint obtained by the New York Post. “I disrespected you. What are you going to do about it? Do you want to talk about it like adults? If you have a problem, we can deal with it right now.”

The victim, I.A. (whose name is being withheld to protect his safety) told the Columbia Spectator that Friedman had spent the morning hanging the posters with I.A. and his friends, after approaching them and claiming to be Jewish.

Now, Friedman has been hit with two hate crime charges, along with criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree and aggravated harassment in the second degree.

The attack comes in the midst of heightened tensions, both on campus and throughout the city, as Israel prepares for a ground invasion of Gaza in the aftermath of a deadly terrorist attack by Hamas.

Friedman has pleaded not guilty and has been granted supervised release until the next hearing on November 28.

Friedman’s attorney declined to comment.
