After much speculation, the former home of The Mermaid Inn appears to be facing the wrecking ball to make way for a new development.

On Friday, Crain’s reported that demolition permits had been filed for 570 Amsterdam Avenue between 87th and 88th streets, where the beloved seafood joint had served its popular oysters and other fare for fifteen years until closing last October.

At the time, owners Danny Abrams and Cindy Smith told the NY Post that they’d be vacating because the landlord had plans for the building. While those plans weren’t specified, Abrams and Smith expressed concerns over having their restaurant surrounded by scaffolding.

Developer Frank Ortiz also filed demolition permits for neighboring buildings 568, 572 and 574. “The four properties stand between 5 and 6 stories and 60 and 62 feet tall, and they span 46,000 square feet in total. The estimated job cost is $1.2 million, or $300,000 for each building, according to the filing,” reports Crain’s.

Ortiz purchased the four buildings in 2018 for a combined $46 million. His plans for the site’s future are currently unclear.

In April, we reported that The Mermaid Inn had secured a new location at 335 Columbus Avenue at 76th Street. The 6,500 square foot restaurant is expected to open before the end of the year.
