Two young boys, Alfa Barrie, 11, and Garrett Warren, 13 were found dead last week at different times and in different rivers in a story that is drawing national attention because the police have no real leads on what happened to them, making a shocking story even more traumatic for the families involved.

Although the boys lived in different boroughs and went to different schools, the two were reported to have been friends. Alfa was from the Bronx and went to Democracy Prep Harlem Middle School at 207 West 133rd Street. Garrett lived in Harlem and attended NEST+M at 111 Columbia Street in lower Manhattan.
The younger boy, Alfa, was reported missing on Sunday, May 14, while Garrett’s disappearance wasn’t reported until the following day. Alfa’s body was found floating in the Hudson River near West 102nd Street on Saturday, May 20 at about 6:45 a.m., and Garrett was found in the Harlem River on Thursday, May 18 at about 10:15 a.m.
On Saturday, Garrett’s body was examined and the cause of death was determined to be accidental drowning. Alfa’s autopsy was scheduled for May 21, but as of writing, no results have been reported. The investigation is ongoing, but so far, the only real suggestion the police have offered is that “the tides had something to do with it.”
Alfa was last seen by his family on May 12 at his home in the Bronx, and a security camera spotted the two boys together (along with a third) going through a hole in the fence at the East River shoreline, which some members of the family believe led to their deaths.

A prayer vigil will be held for Alfa on Monday evening at the Futa Islamic Center in the Bronx, and his school, Democracy Prep, will hold a memorial service for both boys on Tuesday at 4 p.m. led by their CEO, Natasha Trivers, as well as NYS Assemblywoman Inez E. Dickens. Trivers said that Barrie was a “funny, bright, witty, inquisitive, and brave child.”
