How to Clean Wool Tea Cosies

Cleaning Wool tea cosies requires some care to avoid damaging the wool fibers. Here’s a general approach to cleaning wool tea cosies:

1. Spot cleaning: If there are only minor stains or spills on the wool Tea Cosy, you can try spot cleaning. Use a mild detergent or wool-specific cleaning solution such as Woolite, mixed with cold water. Gently dab the stained area with a clean cloth or sponge, being careful not to rub or scrub vigorously. Rinse with cold water and blot dry with a clean towel.

2. Hand washing: If the wool tea cosy requires more thorough cleaning, hand washing is usually the safest method. Fill a basin or sink with lukewarm water and add a mild detergent suitable for wool, such as Woolite. Submerge the tea cosy and gently agitate it in the water, avoiding excessive twisting or wringing. Let it soak for a few minutes to allow the detergent to penetrate the fibers.

3. Rinse carefully: Drain the soapy water and refill the basin with clean, lukewarm water. Gently swish the tea cosy in the water to remove any remaining detergent. Repeat this rinsing process until the water runs clear, indicating that the soap is fully removed.

4. Remove excess water: After rinsing, avoid wringing or twisting the tea cosy to remove excess water, as it may cause distortion. Instead, gently squeeze out the water or place the tea cosy on a clean towel and roll it up to absorb moisture.

5. Reshape and dry flat: Carefully reshape the tea cosy to its original form while it’s still damp. Place it flat on a clean, dry towel or on a drying rack away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Allow it to air dry naturally.

6. Optional: Use a fabric freshener: If there is any residual odor after cleaning, you can lightly mist the tea cosy with a fabric freshener suitable for wool. My favourite is The Lab Co. Cashmere and Wool Mist Spray which is a Fabric Freshener and deodoriser for reviving woollens. It’s scented with Myrrh, Cinnamon and Cedarwood. Make sure to follow the instructions on the freshener and avoid saturating the wool.

It’s important to note that wool can shrink or felt if exposed to hot water, excessive agitation, or harsh chemicals. Always follow the care instructions and use gentle cleaning methods to preserve the quality of the wool tea cosy.

I hope you found this helpful. If you have any other tips, don’t hesitate to share them in the comments.

Have a beautiful day. xx
