10 Most Affordable Cars with The Option of a CVT Gearbox in India

While the compact car category has revolutionized much with the introduction of cheaper AMT gearboxes, they are said to lack the refinement levels and seamless power delivery one gets in a Cvt Gearbox. The CVT was one of the first automatic gearboxes to be offered in compact cars and is known for its smooth driving experience. While it doesn’t offer the thrill of driving experiences like a torque converter or a CVT, it offers a pleasurable low-speed driving experience, thus making it a great option for daily urban driving duties. Here is a list of the ten most affordable cars with CVT gearboxes you can buy in India:

Datsun Go

Starting price – Rs 6.31 lakh onwards

The Datsun Go might not be a strong car when it comes to sales volumes. However, it offers a premium but the affordable option of a CVT gearbox in a budget-oriented segment of entry-level cars. The range of Datsun Go CVT includes two variants – T CVT and T(O) CVT, both of which are powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder Petrol Engine. This engine is capable of producing 76 bhp of maximum power and 104 Nm of maximum torque.

Datsun Go+

Starting price – Rs 6.80 lakh onwards

Like the five-seater Go hatchback, the seven-seater Go+ is also a dud in overall sales. However, it was the first vehicle in the passenger car market (after the utilitarian Maruti Suzuki Eeco) to offer a seven-seating layout in a sub-four metre car. The facelifted version got the options of CVT gearbox in two of its variants – T CVT and T(O) CVT. Both these variants share the 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with the Datsun Go, and here too, it makes 76 bhp of maximum power and 104 Nm of maximum torque.

Honda Amaze

Starting price – Rs 8.13 lakh onwards

The Honda Amaze holds the title of the only subcompact sedan offered with a CVT gearbox. The CVT gearbox is available in three variants – S CVT petrol, VX CVT petrol and VX CVT diesel. The petrol variants get a 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which makes a maximum power output of 90 PS and a maximum torque output of 110 Nm. The Honda Amaze also holds the distinction of the only car to offer a diesel-CVT combination. The VX CVT diesel of the Honda Amaze has a 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, which produces 80 PS of power and 160 Nm of torque.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno

Starting price – Rs 8.21 lakh onwards

The Baleno is the only car from Maruti Suzuki which is offered with a CVT gearbox. One of the smoothest CVT units available, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno CVT is being offered in three variants – Delta, Zeta and Alpha. All these variants are powered by a common 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which produces a maximum power output of 83 PS and a peak torque output of 113 Nm.

Nissan Magnite

Starting price – Rs 8.57 lakh onwards

With the Magnite, Nissan bounced back successfully in the Indian car market, thanks to its compelling price-to-package ratio. It became the first sub-four compact SUV to offer a CVT gearbox. There are three variants of Nissan Magnite CVT on sale in India – XL Turbo CVT, XV Executive Turbo CVT and XV Turbo CVT. All these variants source their power from a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, that produces a maximum power of 100 PS and a maximum torque output of 152 Nm.

Toyota Glanza

Starting price – Rs 8.69 lakh onwards

The Toyota Glanza is nothing but a badge-engineered version of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, with a slightly different front grille. It shares everything with the Baleno, including the petrol-CVT powertrain combination. The Toyota Glanza is offered with a CVT gearbox in two variants – G CVT and V CVT. The engine powering these variants of the Glanza is a 1.2-litre petrol engine, that produces 83 PS of maximum power and 113 Nm of maximum torque.

Honda Jazz

Starting price – Rs 8.81 lakh onwards

Even after the fact that it is an old product by today’s standards, the Honda Jazz still offers the required levels of modernity, practicality and economy of a premium hatchback. The Honda Jazz is also available with three variants that offer a CVT gearbox – V CVT, VX CVT and ZX CVT. These variants share the 1.2-litre petrol engine with the Amaze, which here too produces 90 PS of power and 110 Nm of torque.

Hyundai i20

Starting price – Rs 8.84 lakh onwards

The Hyundai i20 became the first ever car from the Korean automaker to offer a CVT gearbox in its second-generation model. The current third-gen model retains the petrol-CVT combination of its predecessor for two of its variants – Sportz CVT and Asta CVT – both of which are also offered with optional dual-tone colour schemes. Both these variants of Hyundai i20 CVT get a 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, that churns out 87 bhp of power and 115 Nm of torque.

Renault Kiger

Starting price – Rs 9.13 lakh onwards

The Kiger is the first-ever shot at the blooming sub-compact SUV space from Renault. And just like its platform sharing sibling Nissan Magnite, the Renault Kiger too has shocked everyone with its excellent pricing, even for the higher-spec variants. The Renault Kiger shares its petrol-CVT powertrain combination with the Nissan Magnite. This means that the Kiger CVT too is powered by a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which pumps out 100 PS of power and 152 Nm of torque. There are two variants of Renault Kiger CVT – RXT CVT and RXZ CVT, both of which are also available with dual-tone colour options.

Hyundai Verna

Starting price – Rs 12.33 lakh onwards

Finishing up the list is the Hyundai Verna, which is the most affordable premium compact sedan to get a CVT gearbox. The Verna got a CVT gearbox for the first time in the current facelifted version of the third-generation model of the car. This generation marked the debut of the new-gen 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine in Hyundai’s portfolio, which makes 115 PS of power and 144 Nm of torque. The Hyundai Verna CVT can be had in two variants – SX and SX(O).
