Weekly Feature #10, Stories From a Child’s Past: Cowboy Sam and His Tricks – Reintroduced

Cowboys and Indians are for the most part a love of boys growing up and even today they continue to be popular themes and a reality of our history here in the US. Today its probably poltically incorrect to refer to indians as indians but more indigitonous people. Either way I have love the old west as many of you have seen my references to Back to The Future III which takes place in the old west. But there are many other examples even today that depite the wild west. This must have been on my mind at this time when writing this but who knows.

Welcome to this Weeks Weekly Feature number #10, Stories from a child’s past, Stories unearthed from my childhood. These stories I am sharing as a young child I had and continue to have a love for writing.

The writings so far seemed to be when I was in between the ages of ten to thirteen. Many of the examples I provided do have typos, run on sentences and grammatical errors so don’t be surprised if see those.

As a young writer I just loved to write, putting aside punctuation, good sentence structure and my English teach would probably be lecturing me right now, you may want to lecture me, but know this is where my love began.

Original Story

This story would be one of my cowboy wild west short stories, which has a any young boy or girl, I had a fascination with life in the west, I have always thought of it as a simpler times, not necessarily easier. This is one of my tamer stories, no blood and guts but trickery from the Boy Named Sam.

Bad Boy Sam and His Tricks Transcribed

Once upon a time lived a boy named Sam P. Jr and he loved play In school now this was in the 1800’s way back when they had log houses and cowboys there were bad and good ones. The ones with the black hates were bad and the white were good and day there was a big food fight and had to call their mom’s and so they came and took them home to spank them at home until said their sorry 50 times, by the time they said it 50 times there butts were pink and red and they had cried all day and a other let go in the girls restroom and one boy had a spray paint can and were spray painting the restrooms and the teacher came in and the boys with the spray can put in the other boys hand and she thought he did that and he said he didn’t do it and he still got in trouble and got sent home and one day he found a Snake and his bone was broken and he helped it and it became his friend and he thought of away to get back at him that he would put the snake in the desk and when he got something from it he would pull out and to stick his big teeth into him and but the whole class ran out of there and Sam said he would go and get it and got it and everyone thought he had courage to get the snake by its head and all the girls were scared all day and he never got back at his friend. The End.

Synopsis

This story short and sweet details the life of a boy named Sam P. Jr. a young child, probably around my age when I wrote this between 10-12 years old. The story takes place in the 1800’s, living in log cabin, so basically the old west. Sam is somewhat of a trouble maker, starting the story with a good old fashioned food fight. This food fight result in the school getting Mom involved, Oh No!

Mom immediately takes them home and spanks Sam until his bottom is pink and red, resulting in lots of crying all day. Part of the punishment was saying he was sorry 50 times and Sam was on his way to more mischief.

Sam now was in possession of a spray paint can, which obviously that didn’t exist in the 1800’s but interesting how that was added. Sam and his friends spray painted the bathroom when in walks one of the teachers caught in the act. In which case Sam hand the spray can to his friend, blaming him in the act, once caught they were sent home.

On to new mischief, Sam finds a snake with a broken bone, that he mends back to health, but has an idea, why not stick the snake in his friends desk and scare him. Once his friend opens his desk out comes the snake and bites with it’s huge fangs.

The whole class runs out scared of the snake and Sam being the hero that he is walks in the class and gets the snake being considered courageous saving the day. Sam never really got the chance to scare his friend do to being a hero. The end.

What Does it All Mean?

The story of Sam is reminiscent of something I have seen in a move or TV especially with the snake in the desk. I have no idea what my fascination with snakes is to this day or what it meant. I know there were some of my favorite films had snake scenes like Indiana Jones.

Sam was also a trickster, but did get in trouble which leads me to believe this was partly me in some way. I was always a quiet reserved child, but getting verbally abused by my grandfather everyday in the form of punishment. I honestly can’t recall if I was smacked on my bare butt, but its possible.

Gitty Up, Always loved being a cowboy

It is my impression this was my innocent imagination just trying to make up a story, but what amazes me is how quietly I could write a story, although mane grammatical errors and spelling errors, I continued my love of writing to this day.

I hope you enjoyed going through my childhood in this example and stay tuned for future stories to come.

As you can see from this picture that I wanted to be a cowboy with my flip flops and cowboy hat. This picture was taken in my old home , the devils home as I often referrred to it as. I loved how in the story that had a big food fight and then mothers were call giving the kids a big spanking leaving the kids pink and red. Now I am not one for physical discipline , as growing up I was subject to me many times. But I believe discipline is still needed today, but we must be careful not to take it so far as this can truly damage a child and even an adult.
