Released: 1987

Genre: Shooter

Publisher: Acclaim / Kyugo

Airwolf video game was first released for the ZX Spectrum in 1984 by Elite Systems, the game also released for Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC and Atari 8-bit.

Based on the popular action military TV series which ran from 1984 to 1987 and centered around a high-technology helicopter, code named Airwolf.

In 1987, Kyugo released Airwolf in the Arcades, followed by a NES game which wasn’t a port but developed by Beam Software and published by Acclaim.

The Arcade game came in various cabinet styles, a cockpit, cocktail style game and standard upright version. These are pretty rare these days, though the International Arcade Museum® have some pretty cool information on the Airwolf arcade game.

THE PORTS OF AIRWOLF

The early versions of Airwolf for the home computers by Elite Games was a flip screen game where you avoided various objects, the later arcade version and NES version was a more traditional side scrolling shoot em’ up.

In the US, the NES version was called CrossFire and did not feature the licensed Airwolf theme song, which was one of the only few praises the NES version got on launch, the gameplay referred to as ‘dull’.

Much later in 1991, a Sega Megadrive/Genesis version came put and was published by Kyugo. It was called Super Airwolf and was a top down shooter more similar to the Capcom game 1942.
