Former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard a contender for Norwich job

Frank Lampard is reportedly a contender to get the vacant managerial role at Norwich and, as he looks for his next job, is said to be willing to take charge of a Championship club.

Lampard’s most recent tenure was at former club Chelsea, where he finished fourth in his first season in charge during the 2019-20 campaign, before being sacked with the Blues in ninth a season later.

The ex-England international’s first managerial role was at Derby County in the Championship, which ended in heartbreak after defeating to Aston Villa in the 2018-19 Championship play-off final.

And talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook says that Lampard is happy to drop down and manage in the second tier again.

This could be the case if he takes the Norwich job – something which he is said to be one of the candidates to do – and fails to save them from relegation this season.

Crook told talkSPORT: “I’ve mentioned Frank Lampard already – it might seem strange that Frank Lampard could go from managing in the Champions League with Chelsea to the Championship because they are going down, even though they won yesterday.

“It would take a miracle with that squad to keep them up, but I do know that Frank Lampard was even willing to drop into the Championship to get back into the football at the turn of the year. So, I think there’s every chance that could happen.

“Obviously the Aston Villa vacancy becoming available may cloud the issue, although his name hasn’t really been attached to that as of yet.”

Norwich sacked Daniel Farke after their win against Brentford on Saturday and, despite that three points, they remain bottom of the league and five points from safety.

However, former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy believes that the Canaries made the right decision in sacking Farke and believes that a new manager could come in and save them from the drop.

Murphy told talkSPORT: “That squad’s got some talent. We can argue about the recruitment, they haven’t signed much experience, I always think that’s a mistake. You need one or two drops of experience who have been in the Premier League.

“But another manager might come in and get a song out of them and get a tune out of them, and why not take that risk now because, as they are, they’re going down.”
