Is A Better Time the groove of the year or an actual “floppy disc”?

With the sentiment and bias of a Wizkid or Burna Boy fan, one would say Davido’s “A Better Time” Album is “trash”. Without the sentiment, on the other hand, it’s easier to be open-minded to what the album has to offer.

After paying genuine attention to Davido’s first album in 2020, it appears the wait paid off.

With tons of 30BG fans around the world who stayed up until 11:59 pm WAT for the album’s debut, the review began dropping too fast for hard facts.

But here’s the tea;

The first Song features popular “FEM” which was released much earlier than the other tracks contained in the album. It can be considered the perfect opening, paving the way for some form of familiarity with the rest of the tracks.

Next on the album is one that has become the ultimate favourite. If you’re familiar with the Davido effect, this song is another example of the feeling. “Jowo” crawls on you, becomes a pleasant earworm and then you get stuck on it. Like the song says in Yoruba, “oya raga raga raga bo mi” which translates to “cover me”. Well, the album does an excellent job of “covering you”.

On the album, there’s also “Something Fishy” that makes a successful attempt to get you into your dancing shoes. Then there’s “Heaven” which has the potential to get you feeling like the major part of a music video.

“Very Special” will have you envisioning your dream relationship goals even if you’re as single as a pringle. And if you have a partner with whom you see a future, you can put this on your list of perfect wedding songs. “Mo kon ma sope, mo kan fe jese e, mo kan fe toju e” are definitely things you want to be saying to your spouse on that day. It translates to “I will give thanks, I want to ‘eat your work’, I want to take care of you.

The Best of Features

In a bid to secure a better time for his listeners in an otherwise lousy year, Davido made a show of featuring some industry-renowned artistes. The features include artistes in the foreign scene and at home who have made good of their space.

Once again, Chris Brown features on a song, “Shopping Spree” with David Adeleke alongside Young Thug. So does Tiwa Savage on “Tanana” and 30 billion gang member, Mayorkun on another people’s fav, “I Got a Friend” alongside South African rapper, Sho Madjozi.

“I Got a Friend” could arguably pass for the most “beat wealthy” songs of all 17 songs on the album.

Confident he could use more of Mayorkun’s talent and affinity for catchy slangs, Davido featured him on another song at the peak of the album’s pyramid, “The Best”. While dancing saucily and bursting moves are the side effects of this song, people who prefer Agege bread to slice bread also have themselves a slang; “this bread no be Agege”. Some fans argue that this song is the best just as the name suggests. You’d have to listen to make a judgement.

The Queen, Nicki Minaj, partners with Davido to produce magical sounds and lyrics on “Holy Ground”. Nicki finishes the cake of this song with icing of rap and soothing alto.

Other artistes featured on the album include Mungeez on waist moving “Mebe”, C Kay on groovy “La La”, and Lil Baby on vibe filled “So Crazy”.

The album also has Nas and Hitboy on “Birthday Cake” which has grown to become a foreign fav. Bella Shmurda also takes his turn on the song “Fade” and Sauti Sol on “On My Way”.

To get more of Davido alone, also listen to Sunlight. The song gives off the Davido effect with catchy a bridge and chorus.

All in all, we’ve found ourselves a worthy club album whilst we party beneath the shade of Covid-19, sadly. While some songs are more appealing than others, the groove is ultimately guaranteed.
