I am not a diehard football fanatic but I do have certain teams I root for and if they are not participating, well……I am all about the party food. 😉

There are two things I love about cupcakes: 1) they’re cuter and more fun to eat than cake and 2) they’re easier to decorate.

I thought it would be fun to decorate some Cupcakes for the Superbowl. It’s almost time for one of the biggest games of the year, and now that we can gather together more, why not make it a party?

Here are three different football-themed cupcakes designs that you can make in a snap: a football, a referee uniform, and a football field. If you make these, you’re sure to receive all kinds of fun compliments and comments.

And you don’t even have to be a great decorator to pull them off!

Ingredients Needed For Football Cupcakes Recipe

• Chocolate Cake Mix – plus the additional ingredients on the box OR your own favorite made from scratch recipe
• Chocolate Fudge Frosting – in piping bag with star tip
• Green Frosting – in piping bag with star tip
• White Frosting – in piping bag with small round tip
• Black Frosting – in piping bag with small round tip

How to Make Football Cupcakes

Here are the instructions for 3 different ways to decorate the football cupcakes. The cake mix recipe is the same for all three designs.

First, you will need to prepare the muffin tin with paper liners. Then prepare your cake mix as per the instructions on the box or your own make from scratch recipe.

Allow the cupcakes to cool completely before decorating.

Football Cupcakes

Pipe the shape of a football in the center of the cupcake with the chocolate fudge Frosting.

Next, add green frosting to represent grass on each side of the cupcake.

Last, use the white frosting to pipe on the lace and the white lines on each end of the ball.

Field Cupcakes

Begin by piping stars on the top of the cupcake with the green frosting.

Then, pipe the field lines over the grass frosting with the white frosting.

Referee Cupcakes

Pipe the black frosting evenly spacing the lines to represent the referee jersey on the top of the cupcake.

Then using the white frosting, fill in the remaining spaces between the black lines.

Football Cupcakes Recipe Notes And Tips

• It is very important that you allow the cupcakes to cool COMPLETELY before decorating. It will be much easier to ice them and there will be no worries that the icing will be too soft or melt.

• If you do not have a star tip, you can simply spread the frosting on the top of the cupcakes with a knife.

• You can buy cookie icing for the purposes of piping the finer lines if you do not have a small round tip. Cookie icing is easy to find at your local grocery store.

Variations Of Football Cupcakes To Try

• Chocolate cake is always a favorite but any flavor of cake mix will work such as lemon, vanilla or strawberry.

• Change the colors of the icing to represent the colors of your favorite team or teams.

• Let the kids add some sprinkles, because who doesn’t love sprinkles. 😉

Cookie icing is a perfect choice when it comes to decorating baked goods. It works great for piping design and flooding cookies or cupcakes. However, keep in mind that it does not dry as hard as royal icing.

These cupcakes will keep for 3 – 5 days in the refrigerator if kept in an air-tight container or resealable plastic bag.

You can freeze these cupcakes. They will freeze nicely if placed in a freezer-safe container and can be frozen for up to 3 months.

Keep in mind that during the thawing process, there may be some condensation on the frosting that could cause a little bleeding of the icing.
