Marshmallow Mini Hot Chocolate Mugs

By the sound of the name, you may think I’m talking about tiny plastic or ceramic marshmallow-shaped hot chocolate mugs.

No, my friends, I’m talking about something even better! Picture little mug-shaped treats made out of chocolate-covered marshmallows!

These marshmallow “cups” look just like little mini cups of hot chocolate – and they taste just as delicious.

These marshmallow mini mugs are just about the cutest thing since my Cheesecake Strawberry Santas.

And they’re perfect for:

  • Christmas Charcuterie Board
  • holiday movie night snack tray
  • serving at your holiday gathering (the guests will rave about how cute & tasty they are)
  • school holiday parties (you could easily wrap them individually in bag to make them safe to pass out)
  • DIY gifts
  • adding to your cookie tins

Why You Should Make Marshmallow Mugs

If you’ve been hanging around here any length of time, you know that I love cute treats. But I refuse to make special treats that eat up my day preparing them.

The best thing about these hot chocolate marshmallow cup treats is that they’re a snap to make. Seriously…SO quick and easy! You can make one in less than a minute (see my video below), so you can make several in very little time.

And if you get the kids to help, that will make the job even faster and easier!

But the SECOND best thing about these mini marshmallow mugs is that you can serve them by themselves or add them (almost like a hot chocolate bomb) to your mug of hot chocolate.

NOTE: these marshmallow cups only LOOK like mini cups of hot chocolate. They don’t actually have any hot chocolate inside them.

Marshmallow Mugs Level Up Your Hot Chocolate Experience

My kids LOVE my triple chocolate homemade hot chocolate mix. Over the years, we’ve tried adding things such as sprinkles and candy canes to the mugs to spice up the experience.

And other than marshmallows, nothing appealed to them. They just love the hot chocolate (and I can’t blame them)!

But then I came across this basic idea and decided to make them for a gathering we were having.

One of my boys was having hot chocolate, and he thought to put this treat inside. I don’t think it would have ever crossed my mind!

The rest, as they say, is history!

I don’t make them all the time, but when we’re having guests with kids or it’s a special time around the house such as Christmas Eve when we watch The Polar Express!

Marshmallow Mini Mugs Process

Follow this process to make your marshmallow cups. It’s quick and simple!

Step 1

Melt the white candy melts according to package instructions.

Step 2

Dip the tip of the candy canes into the melted candy melts and then into the center of the marshmallow. Make a small incision on the side of the marshmallow.

Step 3

Dip one side of the pretzel into the chocolate and then immediately into the marshmallow.

Let it sit for 5 mins. While you’re waiting for the chocolate to set, repeat these steps for the remaining marshmallows.

Step 4

Carefully lift the treat by the candy cane and dip it into the melted candy coating. Be sure to cover the sides fully.

Drag the bottom of the treat across the bowl to scrape off excess chocolate on the bottom.

Step 5

Place your chocolate-covered marshmallow on a parchment-lined baking sheet And let dry until set (about 15-20 mins).

Step 6

In the meantime, melt chocolate and add it to a piping bag.

Make a small hole and pipe around the top of the marshmallow. Immediately add sprinkles and mini marshmallows before the chocolate sets.

Step 7

Once set, pipe eyes to the front of the marshmallow with melted chocolate.
Then use an edible marker to draw on a smile and use the pink markers to make the rosy cheeks!

Your mini hot chocolate marshmallow mugs are ready to wrap up as gifts or enjoy!

Tips For Making Hot Chocolate Marshmallow Cups

Melt The Chocolate Carefully – Melting chocolate is tricky in the microwave because it’s just too easy to burn. A double boiler works great, but I’m a huge fan of this Candy Melts Melting Pot which acts as a double boiler but is faster 😁

Choose High-Quality Melting Chocolate – High-quality chocolate will not only taste better, but it will also melt better.

Use X-Large Marshmallows – Go big or go home!

If you are going to put these marshmallow hot chocolate cups into your hot chocolate, use this homemade hot chocolate – it will be SO worth it!

I hope you love these cute mini marshmallow mugs as much as we do!
