At times we enter someone’s room and instantly get a positive vibe. The room looks just ordinary with not much decoration. But a room that is put together is not coincidental or unintended. The way it is kept and designed is unique to the person who has done it. The things kept in the room are according to the choice and preference of the person who has decorated it. Thus, content of each room and their positioning is different and unique each person.

But there are some common rules that you can follow while decorating your rooms:

• Add a splash of green:

We live in the times of apartments so having a garden is but a dream. This shouldn’t stop you from having a splash of green in the space that you have. Think about having a small garden in the balcony, you can Plant some lilies, ferns or rose plants.

But if you want something useful have herb garden with plants that easily grow in small pots. You can have plants of curry leaves, green chilies, basil, etc. You can also use the window or wall shelf to plant tiny plants to get enough sunlight.

But why limit plants to the balcony, add some to the bedroom and study as well. Some people also keep a plant in the loo to purify the air, like the snake plant, which is a natural air purifier.

• Its your style:

If you want to define a Style its easy to go find it online. Its pretty much easier to take that route. But, then it would not reflect your choice. It might also lead to inconsistency in design pattern. What happens usually is that the styles are often mixed and inconsistent from one another.  There isn’t a flow or a connect anywhere between the designs in different rooms.

Begin by deciding how you are going to decorate your rooms- the style has to be defined. Is it going to be ethnic, modern or full with Indian artefacts? Would it be wood sofas, colorful cushions, copper and brass artefacts, handmade toys, etc.

Well if you are not too good with defining a style, maintain a color palette that is common for all rooms. Decide if the colors will be bold or pastels?

• Make some room:

In most houses an outsized furniture is a signature style. The large, faded sofa occupies almost half of the living room. But it has been a part of your home since long and a lot of memories are attached to it. Consequently, you don’t wish to let it go.

So how do we manage to add things in the room? Think different and out-of-the-box. You can plan the rest of the room around this furniture. Have some beautiful framed paintings, a nested side table or ottomans that can be used as coffee tables.

We have dark wood furniture at home for generations. A great way to infuse it with our current décor is to decorate the rest of the space with upbeat, light colors. Bright rugs, upholstery work can create a magic.

• Space for your memories:

As we travel to different destinations either for work or pleasure- we tend to collect souvenirs. We have some sweet memories that get collected at our home in the form of return gifts that cannot be used, some jewelry bought on impulse, etc. Its great to have some fond memories at home but they should not be displayed in a haphazard manner in a showcase.  The display needs to look beautiful.

There is a way out, you can intersperse these collectibles between books, lamps or plants. This won’t look monotonous and it will refresh you.
