Materials Used To Tile A Floor

Whenever you decide to do floor Tile installation you need the right materials and tools to get an appropriate installation. Integrity of the sub-floor is the main factor to take into account while selecting materials and also the amount of foot traffic in that area. The materials that you need also depend on whether you plan to install floor tile in a wet area like the bathroom or in a dry area like the living room.

When you choose right materials the installation goes smoothly and it will keep the floor tile beautiful for years to come.

  • Selected tile material:

There are endless choices when it comes to tiles like different colors, shapes, sizes and pattern. In fact, they also have varied harness ratings. Ceramic tiles have ratings based on hardness scale and divides them into groups. Group 0 tiles are not good for flooring, while group 1 tiles are good to withstand light foot traffic. Group 5 tiles can be used in areas where there are heavy foot traffic. Choose a tile based on the amount of foot traffic that the area receives.

  • Adhesive Material:

The tiles need to be secure to the floors and adhesives are used for this purpose. Thin set adhesive is called as Portland cement mortar – a combination of sand, cement and methylcellulose. It is available as dry set or latex modified. Due to its water repellent qualities, latex modified adhesive is great for areas exposed to water, like bathroom floors.

Though there are a few thin set adhesive products at the ready but most are required to add water prior to use.

Organic adhesive is called as pre-mixed tile adhesive. Type 1 is suitable for floor tile installations and type 2 isn’t.

  • Sanded and unsanded grout:

Tile work isn’t complete after sticking the pieces to the floor. You will also need Grout to fill the gaps between the tiles. Cement grout is available in sanded and unsanded varieties. Sanded grout is applied in gaps larger than 1/16th inch wide. Its tough to put sand into small tile joints.

While unsanded grout is used for tiles set close together.

Sanded and unsanded grouts are available in dry or pre-mixed form and they come in wide array of colors.

Latex modified sanded grout is water repellent as compared to the regular sanded grout and is a common choice for bathroom floor tile. While epoxy grout is more durable and water resistant than cement grout but more difficult to work with.

  • Miscellaneous materials:

Although these miscellaneous tile materials are optional, they make the task easier and help the finished product last for a longer time. Spacers are small pieces of plastic that go in between tiles while installing to keep the tile spacing symmetrical.

Cement board is useful for uneven floors. It provides a thin, hard surface ideal for tile. You can install cement board over vinyl flooring. Grout sealer is a clear and protective finish- helps in preventing water absorption and staining of the grout.

Tile sealer works in order to coat and protect tile useful to seal porous tile, like terracotta prior to grouting. Tile sealer is not required for glazed ceramic tiles.

  • Tiling tools:

Floor tile installations need common as well as tile specific tools. You also need a few easily accessible tools like tape measure, chalk line and a level.

Tile specific tools are required like notched trowel, grout nippers, and rubber grout float. Safety glasses are needed while using a tile nipper. You will find a grout bag is useful to get the grout into awkward places. Also a tile cutter is needed. Portable tile cutter works with most ceramic tiles but you might have to use a wet saw while working with marble or granite tile.

You will need to gather all supplies before you start the tile installation process so that you don’t have to make another trip to the store.
