Finishing involves applying a special kind of Liquid over the wooden Surface, and when it dries it forms a protective layer. This coating makes the wooden furniture attractive and the wood transforms in appearance, making it look rich and elegant because, the color of wood gets highlighted. Finishes are used to protect the wood surface from dirt and moisture.

• Moisture in wood:

Wood gets spoilt due to water. Tree transforms to useable lumber when its cut into manageable pieces and then dried to remove all the water found in the wood.

Dried lumber is tough and hard as compared to green wood. It is also dimensionally stable. When wood is dried it goes through a process- it is placed in a kiln i.e. a heated chamber, and then it is baked so that all the moisture goes away. During this entire process wood shrinks. It is difficult to dry the wood without getting cracked.

When this dried lumber comes in contact with water, it swells up again. Thus, it’s a trouble when wood gets in contact with water. The joints crack and door or drawers can stop functioning. Infact, even if a less quantity of water touches the wood it swells thus extra care has to be taken. Even weather changes cause the wood to swell and contract. If the weather is humid wood swells.

Kiln drying conditions the wood in a manner that the swelling and contracting is within the usable limits. The application of moisture resistant finish coating slows the moisture exchange. Thus, one needs to apply finish for an elegant look as well as for the wood to be durable.

• Aesthetics:

Finish is important for the aesthetics of the furniture. It is about how wood looks and feels. Unfinished wood looks crude, dull and dry. It doesn’t look fine and sophisticated or rich. When a quality finish is applied on the surface wood shines and it highlights the depth of the wood. The finish makes the surface smooth and pleasant to touch.

There are many ways in which food can be given a finishing touch. Some type of liquid can be poured, wiped, brushed, rubbed or sprayed on the wood. Liquid has two elements – solids and solvents.

Solvent element of the finish evaporates in the air and disappears. While the solids stay on the surface of the wood. It transforms the wood’s nature from dry, ugly or delicate to rich, beautiful and durable.

Solids have a type of resin. They are molecules which when not floating around in solvents, cling together tightly to each other and to the surface they are applied on. They are sticky but for a while. Resins ideally will be liquid when suspended in a solvent and then become sticky when applied to a surface. When the solvent is disappearing, it then suddenly transforms itself into a very hard coating that is not sticky as soft and sticky surface is too messy to touch and gets easily damaged.

The hard coating has to be smooth, transparent and shiny. Resin has to cling to whatever it is touching, even though its hard. But, remember it is not easy to transform it back to the liquid state.

Let’s look at some contradictory requirements that are not easy for any one finishing substance to provide. We don’t want it to dissolve when water, nail polish or any other liquid that we commonly use. We wish it to be sufficiently hard so that it cannot be easily scratched if someone drags something hard on it.

So, to come to think of it there is not one single material that can provide you with all the benefits. Thus, its always a tradeoff between ease of application, smoothness, dry time, appearance, ability to resist scratches and moisture. You can choose what is important for you and compromise the rest of the requirements.
