They shall look on him

                    John 19:37; Zech 12:10

John 19:37

v37 And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced. (KJV)
Zechariah 12:10

v10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. (KJV)

And they shall look upon me whom they pierced. John changes the words to “And they shall look on him whom they pierced.”

Zechariah in his scripture is describing two individuals. The “me” is the one who is pierced and the “him” is the one who is mourned for, Jesus cannot be both and fulfill the prophecy. Of course John had to modify the passage in order to fit Jesus in the text. Moreover, the context of Zechariah 12 is of an invading army of the world nations not a prophecy about the person of the messiah. It’s an apocalyptic passage speaking of end times as nations surround Israel. This entails that the prophecy has not yet been fulfilled so why is John quoting it as fulfillment of prophecy if it has not yet happened.
