Salisu Yusuf wasn’t found guilty of bribery — NFF

The Vice President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Mallam Shehu Dikko insisted that Salisu Yusuf deserves his appointment amidst recent media criticisms.

Yusuf was re-appointed as the assistant to yet unknown Super Eagles coach and Chief Coach of the Team B and Olympics team by the Nigerian Football Governing Body on Thursday.

However, the decision earned the Federation a lot of criticism from the media and some sections of the fans.

Recalled Yusuf held the positions in the past but was banned after he was caught on tape taking cash from men who posed as football agents during Morocco’s 2018 African Nations Championship.

He was later handed one year and ordered to pay a fine of $5,000 by the federation following the NFF Ethics and Fair Play Committee ruling that the coach received $1,000 from the men and not a bribe.

Dikko speaking in an interview with Arise TV, admitted the Kano Pillars gaffer made a mistake in the past, but it has nothing to do with bribery.

He also said Salisu was given the job, because of his success story with the team.

“This issue keeps coming up anytime Salisu Yusuf is getting a job, either with Clubs or National team,” Dikko said.

“He made an error and has paid for it. This thing is going to be part of his life forever, but people need to be fair and analyze the whole matter.”

“You see people posting on social media that he was banned for taking a bribe, but that’s not factual. He was charged with those offenses, but at the end of the day, he was only found guilty of accepting a gift by the Ethics Committee.”

“Based on the video, he has cleared off any bribery issue, because he told those people that he selects his players based on merit. It was at a point of leaving the meeting that he was offered that money and he made the error of judgment.”

Dikko went further,  “Following the investigation, he never contacted those guys asking how far about the deals.”

“Obviously, he made an error and was been punished for it. He already served his ban and deserved to work now. Nobody ever doubts his technical ability.”

“In fact after the decision of the Ethics Committee, the NFF also handed him over to the ICPC to see, if he owns some assets that he can’t explain and another investigation was done and he came out clean .” He concluded.
