Dubbed The “Suitcase Killer” Heather Mack Is Taken Into Custody By Federal Agents Soon After Arriving At Chicago Airport

Heather Mack, 26, was detained seconds after arriving in the United States for the first time since being convicted of assisting in the murder of her mother in Bali in 2014. Her detention at O’Hare marked the beginning of a new chapter in Mack’s years-long international drama, one that might drag on for years and jeopardize Mack’s 6-year-old daughter, Stella whom she gave birth to while she was incarcerated.

Mack arrived in Chicago on Tuesday after being deported from Indonesia for good behavior after being released from jail two years and eight months early. Mack spent her first day back in the United States since her mother’s death in federal custody, facing allegations that may land her in prison for the rest of her life.

Mack received a ten-year term in 2015 for helping to murder her mother, Sheila von Wiese-Mack, and then stuffing her remains in a suitcase. Officials in Indonesia have requested that Mack be barred from re-entering the country for the rest of her life.

Heather Mack, Jailed For Killing Mom Is Scheduled To Be Released

Heather Mack was supposed to travel to Los Angeles, according to defense attorney Brian Claypool, but the FBI diverted her to Chicago instead. Heather Mack and her 6-year-old daughter arrived at O’Hare in the midst of a circus-like environment, with scores of media gathered outside the arrival gate, waiting for any sign of Heather Mack and her daughter. They were let down when Heather Mack was apprehended shortly after arriving.

Tommy Schaefer’s mother, Kia Walker, arrived at the airport as well, hoping to see her granddaughter. She last saw her when she was born in Bali, but she has only seen her online in the last six years. She also intends to battle for Stella’s custody.

In the meantime, according to Cook County Circuit Court documents, a judge named Vanessa Favia as Stella’s guardian this week. Heather Mack’s attorney, Favia, had previously worked with her. Stella was supposed to stay with her foster family, but Indonesian officials refused, claiming that “minors must be escorted by their moms when their mothers are deported.” Stella, who is six years old, traveled with her foster mother, who has cared for her since she was two years old.

Heather Mack will have a detention hearing on November 10th, according to the judge.

Tommy Schaefer, Mack’s boyfriend and Stella’s father at the time of the crime is still serving his 18-year term for Wiese-Mack’s murder.
