After being found guilty of murdering Botham Jean inside his own house, Amber Guyger was sentenced to ten years in prison in October 2019.
A court learned how Guyger mistook Jean, a Black man, for an intruder and shot him during the trial.
Guyger had mistakenly entered Jean’s apartment, which was one floor below hers in the South Side Flats where they both lived, after a long change, thinking it was hers.
During the court hearing, Guyger will be represented by Michael Mowla, a Dallas-based appellate lawyer.
Guyger’s attorneys will appeal to have her murder conviction overturned and replaced with a criminally negligent homicide charge, which carries a lighter penalty. Guyger was justified in shooting Jean because she thought he was in her apartment, according to the appeal.
