Will we see Dhoni playing international cricket ever again?

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) deferred indefinitely because of the ongoing pandemic situation, many players have been dealt a major blow. A number of young and veteran cricketers were banking on the high-profile tournament to stake their claim to the national side. One of them was MS Dhoni, the veteran Indian star player.

Dhoni last played a competitive cricket match in July 2019 – the semi-finals of the World Cup in England against New Zealand. Since then, speculation has been rife about his future. Many predicted that Dhoni would perhaps bid adieu to international cricket as he wasn’t seen playing any cricket and made himself unavailable for many tournaments.

However, it was soon revealed that Dhoni would be featuring in the 2020 season of the IPL. With the World T20 in Australia slated for October this year, it was presumed that Dhoni would be playing the IPL to prepare for the big tournament and perhaps make his return to international cricket after putting on a good show.

That was not to be, unfortunately. With the IPL and all other sporting events postponed for cancelled for now, there will not be any cricket played for the foreseeable future. Dhoni is already 38 and will turn 39 on this July. Cleary, time isn’t on his side anymore. He wasn’t in the best of forms even before he took the self-imposed sabbatical post the World Cup and there were questions being asked even then about his place in the eleven.

Now that so much time has passed in between and India has already invested on the likes of Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul for the wicket-keeper batsman position, how does MS Dhoni fit in?

If the IPL and the World Cup both get pushed back to 2021, it would make things even more difficult for Dhoni. So the big question now is: “Will we ever get to see Dhoni play international cricket again?” Have we already seen the last of the great wicket-keeper batsman?

It is tough to predict what will happen of Dhoni’s career now. He has, incidentally, expressed his interest to play the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy’s next edition. The T20 tournament is generally played in November every year and is seen as a tryout for several domestic Indian players for the IPL. Dhoni last played in this tournament way back in 2007.

Now that he has shown a desire to feature in it again says how much it means for him to be back in action. His hunger is still intact, clearly. Now, if only he can find his mojo back and give a final push to bring himself back into the reckoning.

That being said, this will not be easy for the Jharkhand lad. With age, form and time going against him it will be interesting to see if MS Dhoni is able to fight it out and turn the tide.
