In the most surprising of results, world champions England were thumped by South Africa in the 1st ODI of at Cape Town by 7 wickets. South Africa, who had lost the Test series against England 3-1 and are going through a transition, were expected to struggle against the ODI world champs despite playing at home.
However, they put up a professional display led by Quinton de Kock and now lead the 3-match series 1-0. The series is now nicely set up and the second ODI on February 7 promises to be a riveting contest.

The Proteas finally put up a team performance and were good with both the bat and the ball. The bowlers restricted England to a modest 258. Tabraiz Shamsi was the pick of the lot with 3-38. The others like JJ Smuts, Lungi Ngidi and Beuran Hendricks utilized the juice in the pitch quite well. It will be interesting to see how England responds to them in the 2nd match.

In their bowling, England has Chris Woakes and Sam Curran as their lead bowlers. However, Tom Curran, Matthew Parkinson and Joe Denly would have do much better. Chris Jordan, with his ability to bowl at the death, might have an important part in the next game.
