The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras on use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies to strengthen the legal domain.

The Apex Court and Iit Madras would collaborate on using Artificial Intelligence and emerging technologies for transcription tools, summarisation of page transcript, translation tool, exclusive streaming platform for court trials, process automation and large language models for the legal domain. 

The development followed the visit of the CJI to IIT Madras in July this year.

The collaboration, which would also also focus on leveraging AI tools in Capacity Building &

Training, besides creating e-Learning Platform and ICT skill development courses, would be a significant leap forward in the incorporation of AI and technology to enhance the efficiency, accessibility and capacity building of the legal domain. 

The MoU aimed at facilitating the digital transformation of the Indian judiciary and aligning it with the vision for a more efficient and technologically advanced legal ecosystem to improve the access to justice.

The CJI had visited IIT Madras in July this year for the 60th Convocation Ceremony of the institute.He had then said that AI, which had immense potential, could also be used to perpetuate discrimination and unfair treatment. 

As per the CJI, the real redemption of technology was in enabling freedoms and human rights of every individual. He said that technology had the ability to make the people resilient to future threats that loomed over future freedom.

The CJI has always been a strong advocate for the use of technology in the judiciary and has even asserted that technology was not a ‘matter of choice’ anymore and was very much a part of the legal system.

Under his leadership, the Supreme Court has been driving technological enhancement in making its process automated, user-friendly and citizen-centric to enhance the access to justice.
