Lauren Heike Murder: Phoenix Hiker Brutally Stabbed 15 Times

In a tragic incident, a 29-year-old woman named Lauren Heike lost her life while hiking on a trail in Phoenix. The horrifying details, as per court documents, reveal that she was stabbed a shocking 15 times. The suspect, a 22-year-old named Zion William Teasley, has been apprehended and charged with first-degree murder.

Zion Teasely: The Man Who was Behind Lauren Heike Murder

Lauren Heike’s body was found in the desert about a day after she was attacked around 10:30 a.m. on a Saturday. A man named Zion Teasley was brought to court, and the judge decided he needed to pay $1 million to get out of jail. However, this murder is not just a random action.  Zion has had a history of violence.

Teasley had recently been fired from his job due to reported aggression towards female employees. The management at his former workplace revealed to investigators that he frequently carried a pocketknife, aligning with the potential murder weapon, according to the probable cause document.

The police were alerted to the crime when responding to a person-down call on the hiking trail. Simultaneously, Heike’s friend called in, reporting her absence from work, which was unusual. The probable cause document suggests a gruesome scene, indicating that Heike’s path of travel showed signs of a struggle.

Investigators believe she was chased through or over a barbed wire fence. A medical examiner confirmed 15 stab wounds on her upper body, along with defensive wounds on her hands and forearms.

Investigation So Far

Phoenix police Lt. James Hester, in a press briefing, conveyed that he believes Lauren fought back against her assailant but her injuries proved too severe. Hester currently considers the attack as random, although the investigation is ongoing.

Crucially, the murder weapon has not yet been recovered. Hester mentioned during the briefing that a photo and tattoo description provided by Heike’s family were used to identify her. The police had previously released surveillance footage depicting a suspect running near the crime scene.

Zion Teasley, who was captured on video running from the area, got arrested on Thursday night. He’s already on probation because he was found guilty of robbery, armed robbery, and causing trouble in an earlier case. He got out of prison in the month of November.

The probable cause document states that DNA from Heike’s shoe at the crime scene was preliminarily matched to Teasley. Furthermore, a search warrant for cell carrier data placed him in the area at the time of the murder. The suspect in the surveillance footage was wearing clothing stolen from Teasley’s former employer.

What Teasley has to Say?

In a police interview, Teasley claimed to be in the area, walking to a movie theater. He professed awareness of Heike’s attack from the news but couldn’t recall if he had ever met her.

Teasley denied any intention to harm another person, stating, “I am definitely not the person who plans to kill another person,” and added, “If I was going to do something like that it wouldn’t be premeditated.”

Prosecutors expressed concerns about Teasley being a flight risk, citing a scheduled flight to Detroit. The judge set the bond at $1 million due to these concerns and the ambiguity of whether the attack was targeted or random.

The next court appearance for Teasley is scheduled for May 11 for a status conference, with a preliminary hearing set for May 15. Phoenix officials expressed gratitude to Heike’s family for their cooperation and bravery in speaking out. The police and detectives were commended for their diligent efforts in swiftly arresting the suspect.

Mayor Kate Gallego praised everyone’s hard work, calling it a team effort. She thanked the police officers and detectives for their dedication to bringing justice to Lauren Heike’s family and the community. With the suspect in custody, people in Phoenix can feel a bit more at ease.
