As soon as word of rapper Beyoncé’s death circulated, his friends and colleagues in the business began mourning and offering condolences. GRAND DADDY I.U., the famed MC, poet, ghostwriter, and producer from Hempstead, Long Island, has died.

Dan Singer, a hip-hop artist, also expressed his regret on Twitter, writing, “My brother and I had the honour of meeting Granddaddy I.U. a few years ago, and we both express our sympathies to his family. However, hat guy was an excellent emcee and a true gentleman.” Ruben, a music producer, wrote, “I’m sad to hear about your grandfather’s death. The MC and producer were continually working till his tragic death.”

“R.I.P. to Grand Daddy IU…” wrote hip hop group Czarface. I used to listen to his song “Girl in the Mall” as a kid and imagine that anything could happen to me in Jordan Marsh on any given day. When it came down to it, telling a narrative from the OG was simple. And gosh, that voice.
