“Wonderful World” episode 1 recap

Flashback to 2015

The first episode begins with a tense encounter between Eun Soo-hyun and Kwon Seon-yul, who are in their cars. They reminisce about their past and Seon-yul becomes furious. He drives his car towards Soo-hyun and the episode ends with a crash sound.

This episode then flashes back to 2015, when Soo-hyun had everything she wanted in life. She remembers receiving the Rosal Literary Award and giving birth to her son. She also remembers her happy marriage and love for her husband, Kang Soo-ho. Her manager takes her to the airport for a trip abroad.

At the same time, Soo-ho is at home watching the news about his dismissal from his job. The media refers to him as Soo-hyun’s husband. A flashback from 2012 shows Soo-ho leaving his job after a dispute. He argues that they should use their news channel to reveal the corruption of the mayor, Kim Jun, but his boss disagrees.

This leads Soo-ho to quit his job and become a househusband while Soo-hyun works. He calls Soo-hyun to tell her that their son Gun-woo has a fever while she is at the airport. She is concerned and thinks about going back home. She tries to call Soo-ho and her mother, but they don’t answer, so she goes back home by herself.

The tragic accident

Soo-hyun arrives home and sees Gun-woo playing in the backyard, feeling much better after taking some medicine. She goes inside to talk to Soo-ho and sees him hiding some medicine bottles from her. She apologizes to Soo-ho for not noticing his depression and vows to be more supportive of him. They hear the dog bark outside and find out that Gun-woo has run away from home.

Soo-ho and Soo-hyun start searching for Gun-woo but they can’t find him anywhere. Soo-hyun is terrified when she sees one of Gun-woo’s shoes on the road. They search the neighbourhood all day until Soo-hyun sees Gun-woo in an ambulance. Gun-woo is taken to the hospital and Soo-hyun waits outside, praying for her son to survive.

Meanwhile, Yu-ri meets Soo-hyun’s mother, Go-eun, at her restaurant for a meal. She gets a call from Soo-hyun who informs her about Gun-woo’s accident. Yu-ri and Go-eun go to the hospital where Soo-hyun and Soo-ho are waiting. The doctor tells the parents that Gun-woo is in a critical condition and asks them to brace themselves for the worst.

While the other three are devastated by the news, Soo-hyun is blank and numb. That night, Go-eun tries to comfort Soo-hyun and asks her to bid farewell to her son. Soo-hyun is shocked by her mother’s remark and refuses to accept that Gun-woo is going to die. Soo-hyun goes to see Gun-woo one last time and collapses. The machine stops and Gun-woo dies in front of his mother.

Soo-hyun cries out loud and Soo-ho runs to the hospital room. Soo-hyun and her family go to Gun-woo’s funeral and bury his ashes. Go-eun accompanies Soo-hyun and Soo-ho on their way back home and they stop by the street where Gun-woo had the accident. The place on the street has become a shrine for Gun-woo.

What's the court's decision?

Soo-hyun breaks down and lies down on the street, right where Gun-woo was. After this, the news of Gun-woo’s accidental death is made public. The culprit, Kwon Ji-woong, is arrested for causing the accident. Soo-hyun and Soo-ho go to the court case where Ji-woong is present.

His lawyer claims that Ji-woong had put Gun-woo in his car to take him to the hospital. However, when he realized that Gun-woo wasn't breathing, he panicked and left him on the street before driving away. Ji-woong’s lawyer questions Soo-hyun and tries to show that she was a careless parent who let her sick son play in the garden alone.

She is accused by the lawyer of leaving the front gate unlocked when she came home, which allowed Gun-woo to wander out. The prosecution tries to counter the lawyer’s attempt to absolve his client of responsibility, but it is too late. Soo-hyun returns home, feeling guilty for Gun-woo’s death. A few days later, the court reconvenes to deliver the verdict on Gun-woo’s accident.

The judge finds Ji-woong innocent of breaking any traffic laws, since he showed regret for the accident. Ji-woong receives a probation of 2 years and 6 months. Soo-ho is enraged by the verdict and lunges at Ji-woong. Soo-hyun stays in the courtroom until late at night, while Soo-ho is arrested for his aggression.

How about the ending?

After the trial, Ji-woong contacts Kim Joon, who used to be the Mayor of Seoul and is now a Congressman. He expresses his gratitude to Joon for his assistance in the case that enabled him to escape punishment. As Ji-woong is heading home that night, Soo-hyun confronts him. She demands that he apologizes to her son, but Ji-woong suggests that he pays her money instead.

Soo-hyun insists on getting an apology from Ji-woong for a picture of Gun-woo, but he is annoyed. He says he has many businesses to run and no time to waste. Ji-woong tells Soo-hyun to quit bothering him and walks away.

Soo-hyun gets up from the floor and grabs Gun-woong’s picture. She gets in her car and rams into Ji-woong who is walking on the road as episode 1 ends.

Review

I'm fan of revenge thrillers, but I have mixed feelings about this one. The first episode reveals some of the events that happened in Soo-hyun’s life, but I think “Wonderful World” will be more interesting because of Seon-yul’s relation to her. Obviously, Soo-ho was insecure about his wife’s popularity, but I also wonder about his faithfulness to her.

The court proceeding of this show is a joke of the South Korean legal system, because it is so simple for criminals to get away with their crimes even when they're severe. It is horrible that the lawyer blames Soo-hyun for being a ‘poor parent’ while clearing his client of the fault for being a drunk driver. We learn that Kim Joon has helped Ji-woong evade the law, but it also implies that the case is linked to Soo-ho.
