Packing for trips

Often, we get stuck with the idea of what to pack and what not to pack for trips. You can’t have all the things on your trip and in fact you don’t need to carry every small thing with you. Times are changing and heavy luggage is not cool for travelers, especially backpackers and the ones on longer holidays.

Check out the things not to pack on your next trip for a lighter travel.

Toiletries and laundry detergents

To save space, you can let go your toiletries at home and get it on your way or after reaching the destination. It is much easier and cheaper. Another benefit of not taking toiletries on the trip is you will be saved from taking out the toiletries bag at the security check. Just get your tooth brush, face wash and tooth paste along as these are the most important things of the toiletries and the rest could be bought later.

Coming to laundry detergents, these are another important product on this ‘what not to pack for travel’ list. If it is about a short trip or a weekend getaway, you need not pack the laundry detergent along. Even on longer trips, spending a few dollars or INR (depending on the country you are traveling in) for wash and iron is better than packing a lot.

Valuables

Don’t take your valuables on a trip – this is to save your wallet and not space. Imagine if that expensive jewelry gets stolen, won’t you feel bad? Not just jewelry, any expensive electronics or other valuables should be left at home. You don’t need your laptop, kindle and tablet – these days a smartphone can do for all. Pack maximum of two electronic devices in your bag.

Point-and-shoot Camera

This one is for the photographers about how to pack light. If you are one, better take your DSLR along than packing the point-and-shoot camera. A DSLR has a dedicated bag which will be counted as personal belonging and wouldn’t be a problem in carrying as a carry on. However, the point-and-shoot camera would occupy a lot of space in your bag and FYI, your smartphone can click as good pictures as this camera.

Over Ear Headphones

So, you love to use the Sony headphones to shut the noise of busy office or public places. We agree the sound quality is awesome. We get all the emotions and love you have for it but let’s talk practical.

While traveling, earbuds can be a better option than those large headphones. The sound quality is also good and the best thing about them is they are tiny and cute. Now you choose – reduced sound quality or reduced weight of the bag. What’s better?

Extra shoes, underwear and socks

One of the most important things to know how to pack for vacation is – never pack unnecessary pair of shoes. A maximum of two pairs is cool but more than that will just eat up space. Do you really think you will be changing shoes or sandals every day? If you really want to have multiple pairs of sandals (we feel you girls), get the lighter flats or espadrilles.

Coming to extra socks and underwear, you can always wash them and wear, 2-3 pairs is enough. Taking dozens of them is foolishness. Packing less doesn’t state you as dirty. Just be active enough to wash your undies daily.

Cold weather garments

Here comes the role of smart packing. When you are packing for a trip to a colder region, especially during winters, woolens are on top of the must-packs list. No, we are not asking you to skip woolens but to think of something that can keep you warm while occupying minimum space in your bag.

Bulky sweaters and thick sweatshirts usually take a lot of space. To avoid this, plan dressing in layers. Wear two or three layers of clothes (thin layers) of the suitable material to stay warm. This way you can keep your wardrobe versatile for any and every weather. You will just need to add or take-off clothes depending on the weather conditions.

Sleep Sack

Unless you read a bad review about bed bugs in your hotel, sleep sacks are not required on the trip. With the increasing tourism, even non-hotels have started keeping the sheets and rooms clean. Who wants a bad review on their website (like a dent on a car)!

If you are staying at an Airbnb apartment or room or say, a hostel, you will still get clean and comfortable beds to sleep. No need of sleep sack pal.

So, the next time you book cheap flights to Hyderabad or any other city in India or say elsewhere across the world, you know what needs to stay out of your bag and what goes in.
