The truth about being in set 1

So fun fact about me is that in yr 10 and currently in yr 11 I was/am in set 1 for Maths, English and Science. I worked so hard to get there as I had never been in set 1 ever in my life. So once I got there, well…

It has it’s ups and downs at times, the purpose of this blog is not trying to put you off striving for set 1, rather it is just to tell you the darkside of being at the top.

1) Stress- don’t get me wrong, being in set 1 is beautiful and you feel like you’ve achieved something but there is a lot of stress. There is the stress of making sure you stay in set 1 as many people will want the spot you have and the stress of making sure you’re as smart as the rest of the people in your set, that you’re not the dumb one who got lucky

2) Wondering how on Earth you got there- believe me when I say that I do not know how on earth I managed to get to set 1 in English and Science and how I managed to stay there because looking at my past grades in those subjects and my understanding of what we do in those subjects, has left me wondering countless times “how on earth did I get here

3) The phrase “you’re set 1 you should know this/ you should be able to do this- Just no. People don’t know this but most of the time, being in set 1 doesn’t actually mean you’re smart. It could mean that you are able to revise really well and score well on tests or that you’ve had many mental breakdowns and you’re school decided take pity on you. There could be many reasons other than assuming someone is smart. So when teachers say that, it is so annoying

4) The unrealistic expectations- In some schools what they expect from set 1 students are insane. (I personally like people having high expectations of me, I’m just talking generally). Like expecting us to get grade 9’s (A**) in everything (which is what I want but again not the point). It’s mostly just the crazy amount of pressure they put on set 1 students

5) Teachers thinking that we can do it all- (this applies to all sets). What this means is that teaches think they can give us 10 pieces of homwork + revision of 3 tests all due for the next week and we will not have a problem with it. That is completely ridiculus. It’s like “let’s just not care about our student’s mental health, they can handle this”

Anyways I hope you enjoyed this blog
